Hi I have a few of these, if the points are ok then it is the condensor 99% of the time. Much easier changing that first then trying to chase down a bad wire that may not exist.

Does anyone know if either of these engines has a variator that seems to boost performance?

What is your top speed now, I have an 85 150 that would only hit 40 when I first got it all I had to do to get it to 63 was clean the vaccum slide in the carb and adjust the valves I don,t think they go much faster than low to mid 60,s
