Also unless you clean the carb and tank, I'd recommend inserting a small mc filter in the fuel line form the tank to the carb to catch the stuff.
Remember to change it in 500 miles or if its weak again. The small mc filter will clog up.
If that doesn't work - I'd clean the tank filter.

starter whirs faintly for a second
Starter was working great. Now all I get is a faint whir for a second but no motor turn or what I'd describe as a click or clicking. Starts great off kickstart still.
What's my next step?

I'm off to buy a new plug as I've got 1000 miles on it since I put a new one in. It runs ok or the same once started and does seem to start with starter or one kick right up if I've run it and its hot.
Will running the cooler plug ...

In the past if the battery was weak , I could kick start it in 1 or 2 kicks.
Now I get a slower crank w/o starting but if I kick start instead - that's taking alot more kicks and trys to get started. I'd be looking at the starter as the battery is ...

I'd still use the internet and get Motul710 or any of 4-5 injector syns and semi syn-
But if I'm limited to auto stores- no internet, no Moto shops I'd use the semi syn valvoline 2 stroke in the pint bottle. You might see Mobil One
2t syn which is labled a premix in pints. It's thin enough to use ...
