Check out this thread from my scooter towards the end.
I'm thinking you have the same problem.

Re: Scooter starts but shuts down after 5 sec.
Check your idle circuit. It's clogged. Is this the same carb that's in my 89 Elite?

Re: 1989 Elite E no power when turned on
Finally got the little bugger cleared. Combination of carb soak and guitar string.
The string couldn't go straight through but it poked whatever was in there enough that when sprayed with the compressor caused a mist in the throttle chamber that my scooter's been looking for for about 7 years now ...

Re: 1989 Elite E no power when turned on
So it's not a straight shot then from the idle circuit (the copper tube we're talking about right) to the pin hole in the throttle bore?
What can I clear the idle circuit out with? I tried compressed air and it didn't work. The idle circuit copper tube fits perfectly over the rubber nozzle of the ...

Re: 1989 Elite E no power when turned on
I'm talking about the copper tube to the left of the main jet tube (in the picture). Should this be directly opened to the tiny hole inside the carb? If so, mine is clogged. Must be the big problem that's been happening since 2003!
I'll leave it soak overnight.

Re: 1989 Elite E no power when turned on

I have a question. There is a tube in the center of the float which leads to a pinhole opening inside the carb. If this was blocked would it cause my scooter's symptoms?

Re: 1989 Elite E no power when turned on
After a battery warranty return and a spray bottle of premix I'm back at square one. I can spray the premix in the carb and it will fire right up with the throttle cranked a bit. (with the airbox on)
I can open the throttle and release the brake and it will run perfect. I can hop on the sucker and ...

Re: 1989 Elite E no power when turned on
The carb is spotless as before and reinstalled but same old problems.
Never starts on it's own. I have to prime with gas.
Engine will stay running at WOT but will die if left to idle.
Even if I let up off the throttle for a second, it will then die.
Any clues?

Re: 1989 Elite E no power when turned on
Thanks for the replies. I'll yank the carb off again and let it soak overnight. Hopefully that gets it running again.

Re: 1989 Elite E no power when turned on
I have a question.
If I disconnect the gas line from the carb and I turn the engine over, should the gas flow freely when the engine is just turning over?
I noticed that if I use starter fluid and turned the bike over, I wouldn't get gas flowing until the scooter started.
Should the vacuum be ...

Re: 1989 Elite E no power when turned on
I did check the reed petals earlier and they were fine.
Do you think it could be a faulty bystarter. I'm going to go check it now.
This is really frustrating. I miss back in college when it would start up everyday even below 32 degrees.

Re: 1989 Elite E no power when turned on
The scooter will start with starter fluid and will stay running with WOT but dies if I let it idle down. It will not stay running without WOT.
Any idea what I should look for?
Thanks,
John
