Thanks for well though out and well written feedback and info.
Okay, if we discount the solar panel + diode idea, and the brainless wall wart, and I stick to my Duracell/Xantrex (and assuming we are past the "Bulk" stage) then perhaps the 2A Duacell/Xantres is fit for purpose? I do ...

Yes, it's a standard lead-acid battery. Given the puny size of the battery at 3 amps can anyone recommend "plug-it-in-and-forget-about-it" charger?
And, any opinions on a 12 volt solar maintainer? Supposed to put out 125 mA (http://sunforceproducts.com/english/details.asp?id=65O?

Battery Maintainer for 3 Amp Spree Battery??
I recently picked up a Duracell 2-Amp Battery Maintainer (made by Xantrex), and the literature notes, "Note: Three-Stage Charging. Multistage charging ensures batteries receive optimum charging, but with minimal wear and tear, regulatingthe voltage and current delivered to the batteries in three ...

Gas Gauge Non-Op... always on "F"...
1985 Spree, gas gauge needle always shows past F as in Full, seems to be stuck. Sending unit seems to be okay, I pulled it out and had a quick look at it, but I'm not sure which end to check first. Sending unit failure or maybe the gauge needle itself is stuck? Tips, hints, clues welcome, thanks.

I'm curious as to why it might need a ring job. Granted, my 1985 Spree is almost 20 years old, but in only has 1,200 or 1,300 miles on it. The only thing I can imagine is that somewhere in it's past life, someone ran it without oil, or that the oil pump gave out somewhere along the way, and even ...

Rings? That's not what I wanted to hear, but it makes sense. Next thing I do is a compression test cold and then a compression test hot, I guess that'll tell me. I suppose it could be any sealing mechanism (gaskets or rings) that could fail to seal when expansion occurs because of heat.

Trouble restarting when warm...
1985 Spree, when it's cold, it starts fine, runs okay. After I ride it for a while, I turn it off.... then 2 minutes later (or 5 or 10 or 15 minutes, whatever) when I try to start it again, it will not start. Seems to have trouble starting up when it's been warmed up .
