Should be able to. But most of the time these parts just need cleaning. Replacing them is a last resort.

The other symptoms you mentioned sound more like carb problems.

Air filters are made of high quality open cell foam. Household cleaning sponges are made of a lower quality foam that has fewer open cells in it, so a sponge would flow less air than a filter. I don't know if it's an Aero, but it's definitely not a Spree.

A Spree air filter won't fit an Aero.

If the spark is blue/white then it's good.
If the spark is yellow/orange then it's weak.

For storage I just bolted an old Samsonite overnight case to the Spree's luggage rack. One of the old hard plastic ones. It fit perfectly between the turn signals at the back of the rack.
