I got Old red fired up and running pretty darn well- until I tried riding to work last year. Going to work was fine. But coming home- I was barely making it to 20 mph. Got stopped by a motorcycle cop on his Harley.
"Are you gonna cite me?"
"Nah...I'm gonna have a smoke while you try to get this ...

Removing the clutch bell
Best thing is a strap wrench. These are available at Lowe's in a 2-size set
with plastic handles- but I spent about $18.00 at Sears and got one with a solid aluminum handle- the Klein ones are great, but way more expensive.
The benefits of spending decent money for a decent tool is self-explanatory ...

Miles?
3634 miles. I do have a new belt, haven't put it on yet...should I just go ahead and be proactive?
The Motogrid has the reed valves for $24.95
Mileage improved somewhat...only used 1/3rd of a tank got the 6 miles home... :( Better than the full tank on my 5 miles to work... :x

Reed valve my problem too?
I rode my Spree to work yesterday....I'm getting 15mph uphill (better than the 3 I was getting...) but can't make it to more than 17mph flat.
Going to work, it sucked the tank dry!
So on my way home, I stopped, reset the carb screws (can't remember which one does what...) as the Honda mechanic said ...

Try your friendly Honda shop
Believe it or not...the mechanics at your local Honda shop are not evil.
I got frustrated, took my carb in to Donelson Cycles here in St. Ann MO.
The mechanic was very friendly- took it apart, showed me how to properly install the float and the tiny float valve...as well as where to clean it.

Main Jet
I found the reason for the gap. The threaded section on the outer carb body where the bolt fits in, it somehow got warped; perhaps when I slipped in the jam nut (less than 1/2 the thickness of a normal nut).
So I replaced the O-ring with a slightly larger diameter one, and the gap is now sealed ...

Main jet?
aww jeez...where the * do I find that?
Now for the gap, the o-rings DO NOT close it- so I am going to tweak it with some material I bought for my 1954 Humber Pig. (a 53 year old 14,000 pound British Army armoured transport.)

AAAARRRGGGHH! WHAT NEXT?
I AM AT MY WIT'S END! AAAARRRGGGHHHHHH!!!!!!
(A primal scream always helps settle things.)
Here's the latest:
1- I took the carb off, took it down and cleaned it. Put it back together and mounted it- with no improvement. In fact, it will start and run only for a few seconds. That's when I noted ...

Needle adjustment
I adjusted the needle so the tiny lockwasher is at the top setting- this I gathered from the manual is the Lean setting.
I also adjusted the throttle cable. Still have good movement up and down with it, and again, I made sure the needle assembly is seated properly.
I tried to take it for, a run ...

Count me in.
Man, with Noiseguy's muffler $125 and this CVT $100, good money spent!
This little Spree is a blast! Yeah, right now mine is barely making it at 15 mph, but I'm hooked!
EAT MY 2-STROKE SMOKE!

Gave it a good run today
This evening, I gave it a good run. I got up to about 15 mph, and going uphill made it at about 7 mph. Throttle didn't seem to make a lot of difference whether it was closed or wide open. :?

Thanks for the fast responses!
Okay...
Kenny- It always seem to run this way. I need to figure out how to lean it out. Of course, I have looked at the throttle cable and needle- as I turn it, I can watch it move freely. But it doesn't really seem to have much impact on the carb when it's running.

UPDATE- Running better, but it still sucks..HELP!!!
Okay...first thanks to all who have either had similar problems or had posted fixes to those problems. Much of that information has helped me quite a bit...be it directly or indirectly.
Now for the update.
I figured it had to be either the rectifier, voltage regulator and/or starter relay. So, I ...

I'm curious for a response as well!
Bro-
I feel your pain! I got this thing running pretty well last weekend, then found the battery went dead...seems it's not charging, just running off the battery. So, I've got the vital electrical stuff ordered.
Except for the bystarter. Mine had 2 damaged wires- green almost in two, other ...
