Burrs on the clutch pads themselves? Is the idea that the belt is getting minced by errant pieces of metal on the pulleys themselves or that they are somehow interfering with the clutch such that it randomly stops rotating, thus wrecking the belt?

Spree wrecking drive belts

Hey all,

My '86 Spree keeps wrecking drive belts. It just went through it's third in about 10 miles of driving. They don't snap. The chords around the back of them remain intact, but the belts disintegrate. How it happens is that I am riding along at full throttle and then, without any warning, the ...

Welp, I have another alternator as the readings I'm getting off this one are a bit sketchy. I'm trying to replace it and see if that corrects the problem. The service manual, as always, assumes tools I don't have. How do I get the flywheel off? They suggest a "flywheel puller" which screws perfectly ...

Testing the alternator

I'm getting no spark and the alternator is at the top of my suspect list. How do I test it?

Spree/Elite 50 engine swap

I'm thinking about putting a motor from an '88 Elite 50 into an '86 Spree. Is it a direct swap in, electricals and all, or is more doing required?

Well, at least I know what the problem is. How much of the block do I have to tear down to replace it?

How's this for an alternative theory. I noticed that my tinkering seemed to be producing a puddle by the back wheel. Black, but not as thick as oil, perhaps some sort of oil/gas mix. It seemed to be coming from inside the crankcase, so I pulled the crankcase cover off. It's hard to see, but I think ...

I had this same problem. It was a tiny piece of debris interfering with the float needle. If, however, it occurs with different carbs, it may be the petcock. Have you tested it by sucking on the vacuum line?

Allright, I got it out. I see a pinprick of light coming through it, smaller than the opening on either end. I pushed a paperclip into it and it seems pretty solid. Is this a blockage or how it was manufactuerd?

The body of the carb above this needle it also features a pinprick hole.

As an addendum, I attempted to use vise grips as well as pliers. It's just pressed in there right? Not screwed?

I was unable to remove the idle jet. I successfully created plier marks on it, but that's about it. It ain't budging. How do I get it out without breaking it?

Well, as I said, I unscrewed and took apart the main jet. It's clean. I can see light through the tube when it's disassembled and a tiny pinprick of light when it's assembled. Are there any other jets? Is that little tube that runs parallel to the main jet (and intersects the fuel/air mixture screw ...

@Kenny: Just tried that. I when I first put the plug in, it would not turn over at all, so I took the plug out, cranked it a few more times, and now it is harder to turn over. No change in starting status. It continues to run off of starting fluid for a couple seconds and that's all. This is good ...

I unscrewed the main jet and shot it all out with carb cleaner. I know that one is clean. Looking at the air intake side, when I spray the six o'clock hole, it comes out the main jet and the top (where the throttle needle would be). When I spray the seven o'clock hole, it blows out the bottom needle ...
