i saw the thing about testing the bystarter as well, but didnt want to cut into the wires to test it.

Really all that is necessary is to unscrew the bystarter from the carburetor, and disconnect the two push-in style connectors. No cutting or modification should be required, although sometimes ...

...or is it just for if you accidentally or for some other reason took it apart?

You pegged it with that statement above, although I did mention in that same article that you can test the bystarter by touching the two wires(yellow to positive, green to negative)to the terminals on the spree's ...

Have you checked the fuel filter and the fuel valve for cleanliness and fuel flow? If not, then that will be the thing to check out next. Make sure that the fuel strainer is free from rust and debris, and also clean out the fuel valve really well with compressed air/light solvent. Once everything is ...

If you finish doing all of that to it and it still won't start, then you might want to check the resistance levels on the alternator and the ignition coil. You'll need to check the technical documents section on this site and click on the link to the 84'-87' Honda Spree service manual for specific ...

I agree, and that way more people can get to try out Royal Purple in their bikes. Like I said in another post; If you buy in bulk, you can be saving a lot of money. Just need to get the up-front cost out of the way first...

Good idea Greg,

For online, that looks to be a good buy, but if you factor in shipping costs, it comes to $13.89. Not bad, but you might get out a little cheaper checking out the local motorcross/hardware store first. I get my RP oil from NAPA for around 8 bucks, so it might not be a bad idea to log on to Royal ...

O-rings can go bad, but usually it's pretty old to begin with. Some O-rings deteriorate faster that others, while some may have just gotten the wrong combination of chemicals on it. No matter what, if an O-ring goes south on you, best thing to do is to either order a new one as soon as you can, or ...

Yea those clogged idle jets cause a lot more problems than you'd think, but I'm glad that you got it running good. :) And a top speed of 27-30mph is a good platform to start on if you go about doing any modifications or upgrades to the engine.

Well I wish you the best of luck, and I hope you have ...

Heck I got my used stator for around $25, and it came with the flywheel/pulser unit too! So yea, as long as you don't try to buy a NOS or new stator(anywhere from 70-150 dollars 8O ) then you should be alright.

Good luck, and let us/me know when you get that stator plate in.

I'm not sure, but you should be able to get a reading if the positive wire on the multi-meter is touching the black/red wire, and if the negative wire is touching something metal like the frame. If you are sure that the wires are good and snuggly connected while testing this, and yet you still get ...

You might also want to check the resistance levels on your alternator exciter coil. It should be between 500-900 ohms, and the lead to test will be the black/red wire coming from the alternator(negative goes to a ground on the bike). The reading on my old alternator was only slightly off, but it ...

Greg,

Yes, it'll be a little hard to start on cool mornings, but it should run fine once it's warmed up. Make sure that you have a needle valve assembly off of a by-starter pushed in there all the way until it seats, and then tape it off good, otherwise the bike might run too rich.

Good luck,

It's probably not the best idea to run a carb that cannot utilize the bystarter correctly, but if you must, you might try finding an old bystarter needle valve assembly first. Then, push it into the hole in the middle where it normally goes, and tape it off good. Of course, then you won't have a ...

Good point, but remember, just because the headlight is getting power while you're cranking the engine over, doesn't necessarily mean that the alternator is ok . Yes, it's entirely possible that the outer coil is at fault, but it might also be the alternator exciter coil, aka the primary ignition ...
