no offense but i think a $300 armored jacket is a little to intense for a little 50cc honda spree First of all, you can get decent ones for a lot less than $300.

Second, the asphalt that's peeling your hide at 30 mph doesn't know whether you started off on a Spree or a Harley :roll: .

A Spree is a "motor-driven cycle" under CA law (in non-legalese, that means a small motorcycle):
- you can operate legally on any street or highway except "limited access" highways (freeways).
- you cannot use bicycle paths or bike lanes
- you must have it registered (license plate)
- you need a ...

I'd guess crud in the carb. Malfunctioning bystarter ("automatic choke") would be a second possibility.

Had the same problem on my Aero 80. The O-ring gasket between the bowl and the carb body was shot. A carb rebuild kit from Sirius (http://www.siriusconinc.com) included that seal plus a needle, float plunger and main jet. Problem was solved.

I don't know if they have a kit for the spree, though.

The manual calls that bit the "movable drive face seal". I'm not sure it restricts anything. FWIW, the Aero 80 has the equivalent, and there's no reason to restrict it.

Finally got around to installing the new parts. Top speed on the flat looks to be right around 40mph (with my 230 pounds aboard). With 8g weights, 0-30mp acceleration is at least as good as stock (maybe a tad quicker), then creeps up slowly up from there.

You can download the service manual from the Tech Docs section. Has pix and detailed instructions about the variator (no mention of a restrictor, though, and my Aero 50s don't have one AFAIK).

Or you can put a strap wrench (used for oil filters) on the plate and use a torque wrench on the nut.

My impact wrench has (approximately) adjustable torque.

Works fine for me now.
