If it's anything like my 89 Elite, then yes, it's all the way at the back, pointing down. That way any water doesn't get in.

Any trick to removing a starter?

I was going to pull my starter (on a 1989 Elite SB50P) to test it, but then I thought about all those gears inside the crankcase and got a little spooked.

Is there a trick to pulling the starter motor, or do I just unbolt it and pull it straight out?

New photos from my 89 Elite refurb

I've posted some new photos of my 89 Elite refurb project: http://www.flickr.com/photos/scalpel300 ... 790026229/

Highlights: a few uninteresting photos of my repainted gas tank and muffler, a shot or two of the cylinder head, and a nice break-down of the gas gauge.

I cleaned mine with a card cleaner bath and repeated blasts of canned air...

Is there a way to test that it's working okay before I reassemble the fuel system?

If it flows fuel when you suck on the bottom hose its fine. There is a big screen inside the gas tank that keeps the crap out, internals are delicate(dont blow it with compressed air, you will break it) and you cant disassemble it.
Is it really that delicate? If so, I think I need to order a new ...

Is the rubber boot removable without pulling off the shroud? The second bolt holding the shroud on is tucked behind the carb, and I don't really want to pull the carb off just to change a spark plug.

I've got a standard spark plug wrench, but that's not fitting...

Hey, is there maybe some sort of rubber boot around the plug? I can't see in there too well, but that would explain it not fitting any of my sockets.

Standard spark plug size on an 89 Elite?

I've reached the stage where I need to remove the old spark plug and put in the new one on my 89 Elite. I tried the biggest metric socket I own, an 18mm, and it wasn't quite big enough. What size is the spark plug nut? 20mm? Bigger?

You should cut open the old one, and take pictures. I'm sure we'd all be excited to see how bad it looks in there.

Would a Honda dealer charge the same amount for shipping? I was thinking about going in to my local dealer, having them order the parts, and then picking them up there. I'm curious whether anyone else has had success with that.

I'm in the same boat. I've sprayed mine out with carb cleaner and canned air, but I'm curious whether that will be enough. Is there anything inside there that I just dissolved by doing this, or should it be okay?

You could always just Kreme the tank and never have to worry about rust again.
I'm assuming that's some sort of tank coating?

Part of the problem with this process is that I can't seem to get the fuel gauge assembly detached. The screws holding it in are stuck tight, so I need to either drill ...

I'm going to attempt the following steps:

1. Fill the gas tank with some water and a bag of glass marbles, and shake the heck out of it to scrub the rust out.

2. Rinse it out thoroughly.

3. Dump a bottle of Evapo-Rust into the tank, swirl it around, and let it sit for a couple days.

4. Remove ...

Rust inside the gas tank. Is there a solution?

I pulled the gas tank off my 89 Elite, and discovered why the gas wasn't flowing well: half a cup of rust. I managed to get most of it out of the tank, but I'm obviously pretty worried about future rust development.

Is there any sort of additive or spray that will seal or neutralize the rust so ...
