I can disconnect the yellow from the stator feed and run a wire from the yellow going to the headlight up to the positive terminal on the battery...

regulated 12v approx to the headlight ...

The external switch for the headlights look identical to the manual, however inside the switch I have 4 wires:-

green (earth)
Pink (leads to what Kenny termed the bleed resistor, 6.7ohm 20W ...

AHA! this niggled me all night. I got up this morning, and have found 2 things.

If I pull the regulator completely, I still have power to the lights.

Not only that, but I have a continuity reading between the yellow stator wire to the brown wire headlight connection.

I am assuming this is not ...

I'm begining to think he has been supplying equivalent parts that are of a different pin out than the one for ...

Couple of questions - then some comments.

Is this is Honda scooter? What model?

When was the stator replaced?
Did the headlight blowing start after that?

So I was correct in working out from the circuit diagram that the main lights draw power through the regulator and not somewhere else?

Help please, this one is driving me demented.

The scoot is blowing both front and rear lights when running within a few seconds of turning them on.

Work done so far....

Stator has been replaced, battery is charging fine with expected voltages.

bike has been retrofitted witha kick start, so there ...

So where is the charging/lamp coil that the manual refers to??? and is that what you are calling the pickup coil?

Further to trying to work out the butchered wiring on my 86 spree.

please look at page 14-7 in the spree manual found on this website. It shows the area of the scooter just forward of the carb. unfortunately the detail is not good, and i can't tell what is supposed to be there.

I was certainly under the impression the headlight power came direct from the alternator, but the guy who is helping me fault find has a different opinion

Yep, running a battery but it doesn't charge properly. I know I've got some nasty electrics on the beast, but the main lights have always worked. It wasn't until the bulb bl;ew and came to replace it that I even realised it had a dimmer on it :shock: (yeah, I know... still pretty knew to scooters ...

Front headlight bulb keeps blowing (both dimmed and full) on an 86 spree. replace the bulb and its gone within 5 seconds.

rear lights are fine. Everything else seems to be going OK.

I know (or read on here) that when they were first released, Honda said that a Spree would do 100 miles to the gallon, right?
