Yes remove the piston from the rod and get it started into the cylinder, I tried the way you are and also broke a ring, one of these days I'll come across another ring and take it back apart to install. (running with one ring)

Just my advice,,, with the cylinder off oil the cylinder and work the piston/rings partially into the cylinder but not so far as you cant push the wrist/ piston pin in, push the pin in and install the retainers. MAKE SURE you have the EX marking on the piston facing the EXhaust port!

Your local auto parts store probably sells sheets of gasket material, paper and cork, I've seen the rings at BikeBandit.com, mrcycle.com and babbitsonline.com. BikeBandit had the best prices and combine shipping.

With the lamp out you can use jumper wires to power it straight of the battery,if it lights then the problem is in the switch or wiring, which can be tested with a voltmeter or testlight.

Excessive oiling/smoke at startup

I have an 86 Spree that smokes excessively the first minute of running, I'm thinking that the oil pump is bleeding down into the engine crankcase when it's not running.
My question is whether or not the oil pump can be rebuilt and if so where can the kit be purchased?
