who's on tonight?! need help with petcock

Post by benH »

I don't have any info on this in the small owners manual, and I am trying to get the spree back on the road. Finally got around to putting all the new parts in, put the new cylinder and piston in had good compression, got a new filter drilled holes cleaned carb put in new jet.....etc etc. When I cleaned everything, I undid the gas lines. I honestly have no clue how this petcock functions.

So here's what happened. Charged the battery. got everything put together, got a fresh tank of gas put a little gas treatment in it and 2oz of 2cycle oil, and tried to get it running again. It almost kicked in on the 2nd kick, but then (I am assuming) the carb and the filter flooded with gas, and a little bit of gas has gotten into the oil line, because I fixed the pump and the line was only about half full of oil since it hadn't been run yet.

so

anyone know whats up with this petcock? diagram? link?

I hope I don't have one line going into the wrong inlet in the carb.... there's 2 lines, never had that before. Anything else I should do since it flooded?

thanks in advance

ok im figuring its the carb or something. one line allows fuel, the other controls pressure so gas doesnt go dumping into the carb (correct?). something is wrong with one or the other. my guess is the carb, since both lines are correctly connected and tight. I cleaned the carb so maybe I knocked something incorrectly. it ran before this (poorly because of a bad piston and cylinder) but still ran and got fuel just fine without any flooding.

anyone?

If your petcock lines really are connected correctly, then the flooding is probably due to a leaking needle valve on the float or a sticking float.

First, I'd make sure you only have gas flowing when you place suction on the vacuum line of the petcock. If that looks OK, pull the carb again and check the float and valve in case it was not assembled correctly. Do a forum search for "float valve" - you'll find plenty or recommendations for checking, cleaning, and seat polishing.

it was the float bowl. the little rubber seal failed (from age I guess) and the float bowl was full of gas, making it a sink bowl, and not doing it's job regulating gas.
