What engine should I use

Post by Hondascoots »

Hi all I have 2 engines to replace the one in my 84 spree one is engine code AF05E-9026179 is has a 4 bolt intake manifold and the exhaust pipe comes off the engine at a right angle it is both kick and electric start the 2nd one is code AB07E-5109446 this too has a 4 bolt intake and the exhaust come off the front of the engine but the spark plug is at a right angle this too has both electric and kick start which engine would have the best performance in the spree.

Greetings:

The AF05 sounds like an engine from an '86-later Aero or an '87-93 Elite. That's good for 40 MPH with little effort. Mod parts are becoming scarce, but still do-able and could exceed 55 MPH if done. I have not seen the AB07 engine code anywhere. Could it be from an '83-'84 Aero? I thought those had 2-bolt intakes, but I'm not sure.

dig, dig, dig, we have a winner.

nope, according to the parts fiche, both the 83 and 84 aero50 used a 4 bolt intake.

I believe that means it is from an '87 elite

Greetings:

Nice detective work EliteGuy50! In that case, if you consider issues like the availability of spare parts - let alone the potential for future mods, definitely go with the SE/05 block. Now before anyone else says it...

Dude! Swap in a Dio!!

I was waiting for the Dio comment I should have told you I have a 2000 and 1994 elites with Dio engines, I have had this spree sitting around and another like it that won,t run so I was going to use these engines in them I don,t know what they came from the guy I bought them from said they were runners but not what models He also gave me an 89 elite bare bones model most of the plastc missing but it runs that also has an AF05- engine but only a 2 bolt intake so I am getting puzzled how there are so many different 50 engines in a short year period I couldn,t find the list of engine I.D.S that I once saw on this site I also have 4 Express 50,s to tinker with that have alltogether different engines, I am trying to load some pics.

Greetings:

The '85 Aero had the first-generation SE/05 engine which featured a 2-bolt intake and a rounded, two-petal reed valve similar (or the same as?) the later SB50 "E" Elites. You're right about the plethora of outwardly identical 50cc smokers from Honda. Even within each series, little changes like the aforementioned intake bolt patterns, the shapes of the manifolds, and funky stuff like different-design transmission bearings/covers - a change that occurred in the middle of a model year! Hard to keep up, even with a Program.

Does anyone know if either of these engines has a variator that seems to boost performance?

Both the Aero generations had the variator CV Transmissions. Parts may or may not interchange; I'd bet against it. Even the direction of kickstart rotation was different.
