So here is my first post on this forum!
So I just bought two basket cases of sprees. I have been working on one and found out the starter spins backward and obviously the bendix doesn't engage. The other starter seems to be burnt out as it doesn't turn to often. Although sometimes once it gets going it seems to work fine for a little bit then die again.Anyway, I am wondering why the starter might spin backwards? Is it possible it got taken apart and some magnets got reversed or something? When I take both starters apart they seem to look identical so I am officially stumped.
The other thing weird I discovered is that the one spree that does have kickstart seems to have backwards kickstart components. The gear attached to the kick start shaft is angled the wrong way, and the piece that is attached to this gear has the grooves going the wrong direction, so when I kick it the notches do not catch on the notches of the main shaft gear. I hope this isn't too confusing since I do not know all the the technical names for some of these parts but I would appreciate any advise on either of these two issues. I have read this forum quite a bit over past couple days and am still confused about both these problems. Thanks.

For your backwards rotating starter - there's 2 things to try, 1st is the simplestAnyway, I am wondering why the starter might spin backwards? - Swap the can from the correct rotating starter to the one with reverse rotation
- Make index marks, rotate the can 180 degrees relative to the drive end casting.
Then grind the tabs on the can to get them out of the way. Tabs are an assembly aid to getting correct rotationg.
My guess is the previous owner did some starter repairs and swapped some parts in from another Honda scooter. Is it possible it got taken apart and some magnets got reversed or something?
If the labels are intact on the starter cans, would you be able to post their info?
Re: Spree starter spins backward!??
Mousewheels thanks for the input. I just swapped cans and now it I have a starter that spins clockwise as it should. I am thinking that the starter that used to spin the wrong way and the kickstart parts that are opposite from what they should be must be from a different year or model. Tomorrow I will install the starter and see if I can get the engine to start!
I have to admit that I didn't realize there was such a following of these sprees before I bought them. But it makes sense because they seem like solid little rides! I just love working on new projects!
Thanks again I will put an update in tomorrow with some pics!

In an effort to learn from this. I figure that the bikes with the variators have an extra cog in the final drive requiring engine to spin opposite.
My original Elite E engine has only two gears in the final drive, The engine spins counter clock wise when viewing it from the left side of the bike. My Dio engine has 3 gears in the final drive which reverses the direction of the motor.
In a two stroke I would guess that the main thing different would be the engine timing and the direction of turn of the starting motor. Think of the possibilities, 30+ mph in reverse.

That could actually be done with early-model SAAB 2-stroke. All that was necessary was to bump start the car in 2nd while rolling backwards. Now you had all 4 gears working in reverse. Probably the fastest backwards you could go until Generable Motors got hold of the Company and managed it with the same sharp market acumen they demonstrated with Oldsmobile, Hummer, Pontiac, Saturn... That made SAAB go backwards even faster.Think of the possibilities, 30+ mph in reverse.
