Alright so earlier today mousewheel gave me some advise to get my starter working properly for my 86 spree. Now its installed and seems to work fine but I still cant seem to get the spree to start. I put some fresh gas in, have good compression and spark, cleaned air filter, and cleaned the carb a few times. Then I noticed some fuel leaking from where the exhaust attaches to head...so I am thinking its is flooding and my questions are:
-could this be a problem with the bystarter? and if so could some one tell me how to test the bystarter?
- The carb float seems to work ok but can some one direct me to a good thread about adjusting carbs for an 86 spree? I am sure one exists some where but couldn't find a real good one when I searched.
-Although the spark plug LOOKS good when I pull it out and test it, could it still need to be replaced?
If some one has any other ideas or input about these symptoms please speak your mind! Thanks in advance to everyone. I am hoping to get this thing running tomorrow.

Clean your exhaust.
Either throw it on a nice camp fire til all the carbon just oozes out or do a lye treatmeat.
Lye treatment can be done with Drano if you cant find lye.
Do a search on this forum for both methods of cleaning.
This should help your issue.

I'd rather be riding my Aero!

A unique feature of the bystarter circuit vs a choke is that it cannot flood the engine.ak_zipper wrote:.. Re: Flooding.. -could this be a problem with the bystarter? and if so could some one tell me how to test the bystarter?
There is a little well in the carb bowl that can deliver a prime, and after that, it can only slightly enrich the mixture until the bystarter valve warms up and extends, closing off the enrichment. There's an air path in the circuit too which gives a fast idle during warm up.
Here's a link - http://www.hondaspree.net/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=22ak_zipper wrote:can some one direct me to a good thread about adjusting carbs for an 86 spree?
If it's fuel for sure, this is not relevant: Unburnt 2 stroke oil can seep out if there's any leakage at the cyl/exhaust pipe gasket.ak_zipper wrote:Then I noticed some fuel leaking from where the exhaust attaches to head...s
Test
Pull the plug & ground the side electrode (helps avoid open circuit stress to the ignition) then crank. Check for a nice pop at the plug hole from the compressed intake charge, and gas smell.
No pop:
- Check the reeds. Could be as simple as disintegrated air cleaner foam sucked in there.
- Is the petcock opening at cranking speed? BTW, the vacuum petcock may not actuate if the throttle is open during cranking.
- Carb bowl filled with Fuel?
- Check the little orifice in the carb bowl between the main bowl and bystarter bowl.
Re: Lets get this spree running
ok thanks for the help everyone! This is what I have done...
- cleaned out the carb again and the bowl WAS full of fuel.
- I can not see through the little orfice/tube between the main bowl tube and bystarter tube, should I be able too? carb cleaner doesn't seem to elp if its clogged.
- checked the reeds and they look fine, and the bystarter seems to look fine as well but I do not know what to look for when examning it.
So should I stick somehing through the orfice between the main bowl tube and the bystarter tube?
My final question is whether I need a new spark plug. It seems to have a nice bright spark but is it possible it isn't sparking under pressure?

Re: Lets get this spree running
Now I bought a new spark plug and this didn't seem to help. I am at a loss as to why the engine will not fire. I know it has fuel, and spark. Is it possible the timig culd be off?
If the timing is off then wouldn't the engine still fire every once ina while if I was to hold the starter button down for say 15 seconds or so?

Re: Lets get this spree running
Greetings:
If the spark plug is wet, check compression. If it is dry, go through the carb again, adding a 24-48-hour soak in acetone, MEK, or commercial carb dip folllowed by gentle mechanical disimpaction of the idle and bystarter passages.
A full bowl does not guarantee that mixture is reaching the combustion chamber.
