Re: PLEASE HELP!!!! [Resurrecting 1987 SE50 Elite -Ed.]
Greetings:
Replacing or re-sizing the main probably will do little to improve an idle issue. Until the throttle is opened, that jet is blocked by the slide needle. Carb pilot circuit is very difficult to clean in 1 pass. The enrichener circuit should also be evaluated.
It's actually easier to do a compression test, so I recommmend you perform that check before anything else. No sense attempting to tune to an engine with low compression. If only a little low compression, my suspicion would turn to the reed petals. If it's below say 90, still check the reeds, but then rings become the more likely issue.

so you are sure the pilot jet is completely clear? i just dont see a throttle cable stretching out enough to make it competely out of adjustment to the point where you cant get it back.

Pilot jet is soooo clean it shines now. When I first looked at the adjustment under the handlebar it was adjusted all the way out,not even attached. I screwed it back on a little and still same issue. If I could get a little more out of It would idle.

I think I'm going to fashion some kind of spacer to give it more adjustment.
Then I know it will idle. How do I disconnect it from the twist throttle?

Also, what screws adjust the idle on the carb the phillips or flat head screw? Neither of them do any different all the way in or out.

Starting to sound like crap throttle cable to me. It's adjusted all the way out and you get it to idle by pulling on it slightly?
I got a split cable if you need one. It is pretty stiff when it's real cold out but loosens up nicely when brought into my warmer cold basement, it should be completely normal in warm weather.

Yup that's right if I pull on it under the hanlebar or back cover I can get it to idle. I'd love that cable evilone let me know what to send you.

Re: PLEASE HELP!!!! [Resurrecting 1987 SE50 Elite -Ed.]
idle screw should be the one higher up on the carb

Gotta take the 2 phillips screws out of brake lever switch housing to get to it.martynkim wrote:I think I'm going to fashion some kind of spacer to give it more adjustment. Then I know it will idle. How do I disconnect it from the twist throttle?
Phillips, if i can remember turning it in should raise idle.martynkim wrote:Also, what screws adjust the idle on the carb the phillips or flat head screw? Neither of them do any different all the way in or out.

Neither of them do any different? That's just not right! screwing the flat head air/fuel mixture screw all the way in should cause it to stall. Did you get that air filter element in?martynkim wrote:Also, what screws adjust the idle on the carb the phillips or flat head screw? Neither of them do any different all the way in or out.

Re: PLEASE HELP!!!! [Resurrecting 1987 SE50 Elite -Ed.]
martynkim, i was looking at your pic on page 11. Is your fuel bowl gasket damaged? Looks like there is a chunk missing by the tube that goes into the bowl. Someone correct me if i'm wrong, but carb works with vacuum and that missing chunk by the tube is not allowing pilot "idle" circuit to operate as designed. I'm no carb expert but i'm pretty sure that will affect idle. Just a thought.
