The base of the 85 Spree bystarter has a groove about 6 mm up from the bottom of the base. Does the clip holding the bystarter to the carburetor slide into that groove? Or, does the clip go on top of the fat part of the base, that is, about 11 mm from the bottom of the bystarter base. Neither the owner's manual nor any posting here seems to show where the clip goes.
An earlier response (thank you!) to an initial posting said an O-ring should go into the above-mentioned groove. But my factory new bystarter came with no O-ring in that groove. Instead, it had a thin O-ring in the smaller groove about 2 mm above the bottom of the base of the bystarter. So are there two O-rings on the base of the by-starter?

Re: Questions re: bystarter clip placement and bystarter O-rings
I have my new-to-me bystarter in hand (thanks Greg) and will install it soon. Are there any best practices. On the old one the brass cylinder by the needle was stuck in the carb. I will clean both with carb cleaner and was thinking about putting dielectric grease around the top o-ring. Anything else to ensure proper operation and easy disassembly if needed in the future?

That dielectric grease is a good touch. The bystarter in my experience over a couple years does not have much problems. The only stuck ones (and I've had several) have all come from previous owners, whose long idle scooters had gummed up gas in the carb. That gummed up gas glues the brass bystarter valve in place.LawlerClan wrote:Anything else to ensure proper operation and easy disassembly if needed in the future?
Re: Questions re: bystarter clip placement and bystarter O-rings
I've seen many a carbs that someone used the longer mounting bolt that belongs on the inside, but used it on the outside and compressed the bolt into the by-starter area,
Smash! Stuck by-starter piston.
Be sure to use the right bolts, there are two different lengths.
