is it siezed...spree

Post by dawarthahillbilly »

hello to all, i bought a 86 spree the other day. the elect.starter does not seem to work, so i tried kicking it a few times, now it wont kick. it feels like it is siezed. my question is.... is it common for the kick start to seize or do you think it is the motot, and how can i check to see what it is. when i got it there was no oil or gas in it, so before trying to start it i put oil and gas in it.
any and all help is much appreciated....thanks.dale :worship:

Greetings:

First, a welcome to the Forum. Nice-looking Spree.

Both the kickstarter and the piston/cylinder can suffer seizure. Removing the left engine cover - 8mm hex bolts all around -will allow you to assess the former. Spinning the drive face toothed pulley by hand will diagnose the latter. The cover has to come off anyway...

Yes wheelman is correct. the kickstarter can get stuck. Actually it is kinda common on the spree. There is a half moon gear in the kick starter and another bystarter gear that get striped over time. Take off the kick start cover. Inspect the gears for wear. If the scooter was kicking and then just got stuck i doubt that was piston seizing.. When a engine seizes you have to have it running. It will not seize while you just try to kick start it. Could be main engine bearing, but more likely stripped gears.

dale try pulling the spark plug out , then try cranking the motor . i have a 86 also bought it about a month ago when I got it wasnt running the last person who owned it cranked on it so much the cyclinder filled up with gas and oil make sure you put a tolew over the spark plug whole or you may have oil all over your bike, make sure you have a new spark plug to replace the old one also make sure you put an NGK spark plug in .this is an easy fix if this is the problem your having

Greetings:

Good point sixty-six! Didn't occur to me but hydrolocking due to flooded engine or leaky pump could sure be the problem.
