Hi,
We inherited a 1986 Spree a while back that has like 3xx miles on it. A family member messed with it to make it run, but it was hard work to get it there. When it would run, it'd take forever to start, and even when warmed up and turned off, it could hardly come back on. But when it was on, it ran pretty well up to 30MPH.
But it got to a point where we can't make it start at all, and we haven't really played with it at all for probably about a year.
He said that he messed with one of the jets and may have made it too big when trying to clean it. I'm thinking that we'd be best off just getting a new/rebuilt carb. There's a carb on ebay that's around $100 rebuilt, or I can send mine in and get it for $60. Is that probably my best option? Or maybe is there a carb here that I can be pointed to?
Also, should I go ahead and drain out any gas/oil in it before trying it out? I assume so. The battery is toast, I believe, but I have a charger for temp use and I can swap it with my Ruckus battery until I get it running and want to invest in it. Any other tips?
Also, what's the easiest route to get this thing to keep up with our ruckuses at 40MPH? Need to go the route of getting it on a variator or...?

No variator for the spree bbk the motor and get new gears is the only way I've seen it done. then 35 is about tops so far.
Yeah, a rebuilt carb is likely in your future or find one on here likely cheaper

For the investment, I guess I'll stick with 30MPH. Any tips on finding a carb? How much can I expect to get a working one for?

If you are pretty handy with tools and have access to a welder i suggest swapping in a variated motor like an se/nb/sa 50. I have an se50 swapped in mine as well with malossi bbk, gears, etc and i cruise @ 55 mph. Sa50 motors can get you 65+ mph.
Re: Make My Spree Run... Carb?
Unfortunately, I don't have welding skills. I don't know how safe this thing would be at those speeds. It feels a little wobbly at 30! I really want to make sure it'll keep up with my Ruckuses for guest riders.

Unless you swap motors I doubt It will ever keep up with a ruckus. As others have told me on this forum, ride slower. I know it sucks but it will work
