1984 Spree idle

Post by griggsb »

Hello. I have an 84 spree with 5k on it. Compression was 72psi. It ran bit not well. I measured bore (it was within specs). I honed cylinder, and put new rings on it. I checked ring gap, and it was also in specs. I got it running again. There was no air filter in box, so I put new correct filter on today. When I first started it (with air screw out 1 7/8 turns) it ran great while cold. I could hammer on throttle, and it took off. After warm, you have to baby throttle to start off. If you hammer it when warm, it will die. Act like it's running out of fuel. If i let off quick, it will stay running. I am wondering if bystarter is going sour. I cleaned carb, and blew out all ports and jets. I am going to ohm out bystarter like manual says (10 ohms). Airbox is in good shape (no cracks), and pipe to carb rubber is clamped tightly. I have played with idle air adjust, and no better. I basicaly need more fuel off of the line. Main jet was clean. I ran a wire through, and blew out with air. If I baby it up to speed, top end is 25 +. Any insight would be GREATLY appreciated.

The bystarter could sounds ok, could be the carb pilot jet sounds obstructed.

The bystater is enriches the mixture when cold, then tapers off as it warms up. So cold, it can mask a plugged pilot (or other lean condition).

Greetings:

I believe Mouse's response is exactly right.

Hate to say it, but you may need to pull that carb again, paying particular attention to the little brass standpipe that lives alongside the Main Jet Tower. At the top thereof lies the pesky Idle Circuit, and your Spree's behavior suggests it may be clogged. A good overnight (or more) soak in commercial Carb Dip followed by a careful poking with a single bristle from a brass or steel brush may clear the tiny, Tiny, TINIEST cast crevice in Carbdom. You can poke from the slide/venturi side with such a bristle held in a hemostat. Try to spot the Legendary Pin-* O'Light from either side. One caution: Do not attempt to pull the pressed-in idle circuit standpipe from the carb. Legend holds that it can be done (USPMale evidently has the tools/know-how) but not by the ill-equipped.

UPDATE. I cleaned carb for the 3rd time, and same problem. I noticed that the air box lid was NOT snapped all the way. That did the trick. These are very sensitive. Runs about 28 after ring job. Sound about right?
