Re: Hello & Getting my Spree Running
Going off last post and 5 up about it bogging, chugging, and almost stalling i'm guessing the pilot jet still isn't very clean. Get the gallon carburetor cleaner/dip from auto parts store and re-clean.

Re: Hello & Getting my Spree Running
i just went through the same thing.jong wrote:Okay. Update time.
On a flat road or downhill it doesn't have much of a problem moving, but when I try to go up the slightlest incline.. it just bogs down and tries to stall.. it's lacking any sort of real torque. It also seems to have lost it's peppy'ness "off the line"
I'm wondering. Maybe I over saturated ( or didn't saturate enough) the new air filter with oil?
i had to kick off through the intersections, small hills were difficult, and had to walk up steeper hills.
my suggestion, based solely off my experience...check your drive belt.
service manual says 10.5mm is service limit, mine was at 10mm.
what happens is the pulleys that catch the belt can only squeeze so close together, if the belt is too narrow, it slips.
once you get going though, the belt doesnt have to work as hard to keep you up to speed.

Re: Hello & Getting my Spree Running
I checked my belt, but I didn't measure it - I will this next week sometime.
I definitely dont' think it's slipping. I would imagine the engine would rev if the belt was slipping. Whereas in my sitaution it chuggs along until getting speed.
I put about 10 miles on it the other day during it's maiden voyage. It is very slow to get going "off-the-line." After 10mph though it really takes off and accelerates without hesitation. I topped out at 32mph (while crouching for aerodynamics, lol).
Currently, up hills and 'off-the-line' is really the only issue. Having never ridden another spree before I can't really compare it to anything. I've been getting by with giving her a few pushes to get it going, then hitting the gas (otherwise it practically stalls out).
How well do your spree's take off "off-the-line?"
Anyways, here are some pics. The new blinkers work great. I've got high-intensity waterproof LED strip in the front, and motorcycle directionals in the rear. Also installed an LED brake light. The wiring was a bit tricky, but everything works well. Even got the directional indicator on the cluster to work as well ( after installing some diodes).
(I took these w/ my phone... sorry for the low quality)

Re: Hello & Getting my Spree Running
Still curious to hear from other Spree Owners...
How well does your Spree perform "off the line?"
Is it sluggish and kinda slow like mine? or does it just go and accelerate smoothly.
Without a baseline, I can't tell if my Spree is tuned as well as it can be. I'm starting to think that maybe the engine is simply tired... or 1980's mopeds just didn't have the power til mid-range anyways...

Re: Hello & Getting my Spree Running
Since the spree has no variator, It only has one gear.
So there are always trade offs between take off power and top speed.
the following is My Opinion of a good running stock spree.
If A spree's top speed is only 25mph, it usually takes off pretty well.
If the top speed is about 35mph, you may need a little "fred flintstone" power to get going
Top speed of a stock spree should be 30mph. With moderate take off. (Kinda putters along til about 10mph then takes off til top speed)

Re: Hello & Getting my Spree Running
First off lemme say SHAWEEET front turn signal idea! i like them alot!
2nd, i can tell ya that when my spree was stock, it to was a turd from the get go. Hills killed it, etc etc. i too had to do the fred flinstone push. i replaced the belt, and it took care of the lower top speed, but didnt do a whole lot for the take off though. Then i put a BIGGER tire on rear for more top speed, that made bottom end REALLY REALLY bad. lol i had to like, ghost ride it for a second, then jump on it. lol (i should have hired my neighbor kid to push me with his quad, lol)
but yah, if you ever bbk it, you can say good bye to the flinstone push. mine does remarkably well with the bbk on it.
next is gear ratio upgrade, which i need to talk to a few members on here about. but anyhow, Glad to see we got another spree member!!

Re: Hello & Getting my Spree Running
Ah, thank you! So i'm not crazy.
I definitely need to flinstone it off the line, then she puts to 10 and then really takes off....
I'm gonna do some searches for this bbk thing you speak of... sounds like a good idea..
Thank you!

Just picked up a spree recently and I anticipate having some of the issues you have outlined(my bowl looked the same as yours with the crud...)
I like the look of your rear signals, can you give more info on where you picked them up and what you had to add to get them wired up properly and the mods you did to keep the signal light working on the dash.
Regards
Jerome
