Need help with oil light and starter problem

Post by Gloworm5 »

I am rebuilding a 1986 Spree that was in storage for about 20 years with oil and fuel in the tanks. I have cleaned and re-cleaned the oil tank and sensor (as well as everything else). The oil sensor LED light does not work. I have measured the resistance across the sensor contacts at about 12-13 ohms. It shows no continuity when I turn the sensor over. I have used the troubleshooting steps shown in the shop manual with no success either.

My second problem is the starter does not work when the starter button is pushed. I know the starter works as I have put a jumper across the starter relay contacts and it will work. I tried replacing the starter relay with a standard automotive relay but it does not work either. Could the oil sensor be causing the starter problems? I can see using that as a safety net in case someone run out of oil. That might save someone from destroying the motor. I checked the brake lights and both front and rear work.

Thanks

Glowworm5,
Hi - and Welcome!

Oil Level Light
  1. Double check the float switch - unplug the connectors, then short the wires together with a scrap of wire.
  2. If there's still no light - trace voltage at the LED and check its ground path. Follow with measurements back to the tank if required.
Starting problem
You have trouble shot most of the circuit. I've marked up the wiring diagram - with the brake light working and the starter ran when you jumped the relay contacts, its down to the part which energizes the starter relay coil.
  1. Pull the brake lever, and measure the at the relay the Green/Yellow stripe wire - should be +12v
  2. With the lever still pulled, measure at the Yellow/Red wire should be +12v too
  3. Now press the stater button, Voltage at the Yellow/Red wire should drop to near zero, and the relay should click.

Sometimes the starter button contact gets dirty/oxidized. It can be disassembled and cleaned. This contact is similar to the Horn button contact cleaning topic we have on the Wiki http://hondaspree.net/wiki/index.php5?t ... ch_Rebuild

Easy place to make all the measurements is at the starter relay connector.
