Rebuilt engine, no spark.

Rebuilt engine, no spark.
I just finished rebuilding my 87 Spree engine, it has compression, gas, but no spark. I replaced the spark plug, coil, CDI unit, and regulator. The fuse it ok and I have the killswitch off and it's grounded. Any suggestions? My lights aren't working either (bulbs look ok), but the horn and electric starter both work. Any suggestions?

Re: Rebuilt engine, no spark.
Did you have the engine off the scooter ?
Make sure the wires from the engine are hooked up
one from the inductive pickup
and I think 3 more that come from the stator

If it had spark before you tore it down and rebuilt it and now it doesn't, YOU screwed something up somewhere. Go back and check you installation work of the motor back into the scooter frame.

Nope its back on the scooter all ready to go, and all the wires are hooked up to the stator.Trafficjamz wrote:Did you have the engine off the scooter ?

Actually when I got this it had been sitting for 20 years and was unable to even turn over. No spark or anything.Bear45-70 wrote:If it had spark before you tore it down and rebuilt it and now it doesn't, YOU screwed something up somewhere. Re: Rebuilt engine, no spark.
The you have to open the manual and start trouble shooting. First thing to check is the stop/run switch in the run position. Then start testing the stator, trigger (pulse generator) the CDI, the coil and don't forget plug wire, its end at the plug and the spark plug.ashlanky wrote:Actually when I got this it had been sitting for 20 years and was unable to even turn over. Re: Rebuilt engine, no spark.
The responders have this pretty well covered.
Wait... the kill switch *grounds* the wire to the CDI to *kill* the ignition. Double check the Black/White stripe wire at the CDI is not grounded....and I have the killswitch off and it's grounded.
Running the resistance checks in the service manual on the spark exciter coil, the pulse generator, CDI and coil may give a clue what's wrong.I replaced the spark plug, coil, CDI unit, and regulator
Re: Rebuilt engine, no spark.
I tested the stator and it's fine, but then as I went to go check the pulse generator I find that it's missing. This scooter had so many things missing off of it when I got it, I guess I can add this to the list. So once I get one on there hopefully I'll have spark.
Re: Rebuilt engine, no spark.
Well I got the pulse generator and still no spark. So so far I've tested the stator and it's fine, new coil, new pulse generator, new regulator, new CDI unit, brand new spark plug, and made sure it was grouded properly (which it is). I have no idea what it could be.
Re: Rebuilt engine, no spark.
Uh.......the start/run switch wire to the CDI must be ungrounded or you will have no spark, same for the ignition switch.ashlanky wrote:Well I got the pulse generator and still no spark. When I say grounded, I mean the things that need to be grounded according to the manual.Bear45-70 wrote:Uh.......the start/run switch wire to the CDI must be ungrounded or you will have no spark, same for the ignition switch.ashlanky wrote:Well I got the pulse generator and still no spark. Any suggestions, I need to get this running by next weekend.
