Honda Elite
What should a compression gauge read on an Honda Elite 50? the gauge does not move when I check it and when I pulled the cylindar head off the gasket was out of round. (metal gasket)
Re: Honda Elite
120-130 psi is good. Get new gasket and re-check.

Re: Honda Elite
I have had to order it. I put the old one back on in a different position and was able to get about 35 PSI on it but it would still not start.
Re: Honda Elite
Yeah, it won't start on 35 psi. Are you checking compression using electric starter and holding throttle wide open? And is comp gauge tight enough in spark plug hole? Sounds like damaged head gasket problem.

Re: Honda Elite
Before I took it apart the gauge did not read at all when I did both the electric start and kick start. After I took it apart and rotated the gasket I got the 35 PSI so I am hoping it is just a bad gasket.

Re: Honda Elite
Also the cylinder is clean and smooth with no grooving or pitting that I can see from the top side. I thoroughly cleaned it and did not see any marring.
Re: Honda Elite
did you take the cylinder off? how did the piston and rings look?
Nothing like getting stroked!

Re: Honda Elite
No I did not not, I am hoping the gasket solves the problem. I have worked on cars before but this is my first two cycle.
Re: Honda Elite
Holding the throttle open on a comp check=thats new to me

Re: Honda Elite
Hey guys. My next project is an late 80's elite 50. The odometer reads 6500+ miles and it was "dead" when I got it. I got an entire motor/rear end off ebay with a supposed 1000+ miles for a good price so I grabbed it in the event the original motor was spent. Any help on how to check the engine's compression: recommended tools, instructions. I get spark but even with a battery I don't have lights or a horn so I am not sure where to start.
Also got a sketchy "new replacement" carb off ebay but am missing the bystarter. Do I need the bystarter? Will it operate without the part, if so can I cover up that opening?
Thanks in advance for your knowledgable guidance!
