Removing 2nd Airbox Tab: Questions....
Guys-
Questions:
1.) Can anyone provide a picture of the 2nd airbox tab that can be removed? I've looked over my airbox and cannot seem to locate it.
2.) Once you remove this tab, do I need to upjet or will the .82 jet suffice with the current setup? (see below my current setup).
My Current Setup:
-82 Jet
-De-restricted stock Elite S Exhaust
-Prodigy Variator w/ 9g stock rollers
-1.5k Center Clutch Spring
-2k Clutch Grabber springs
The Elite runs perfect right now....cruises at about 40mph on flat land. Just wondering if opening that 2nd airbox tab will allow it to breath a little better and get a tad bit more of performance out of it?

From memory
follow the air path by looking inside the stock airbox. At the bottom you'll see two rectangular tunnels. One is open to the outside, while the other is blocked by molded plastic. The second hole can be drilled out and filed to match the open one.
I would feel safer running a #85 at least with the drilled airbox and setup you describe. Honda has an 88 and I would actually start with that one if I had your setup.
Did you convert to straight premix or are you running the P-model pump + some premix?

ok here's some pictures. take off the airbox cover, then here's where the air intake things are. my tab is already punched out.
ok so picture number 1 is the outside of the holes. pay no attention to the extra holes, i been messing around and putting in it, and there covered up with electrical tape. that's the two intake holes in the air box cover.
then the next picture, that's where the air comes in at on the inside of the airbox cover. the one that looks all weird, and cut crooked, that's the one restricted. if your's is restricted. use an 85, or 88, or 90 main jet. i used 85, and well, i had put on a new fuel filter, and it was setting sideways, and filling up halfway up hills, but my scooter was quitting with someone else on it with me. i think overheating. and i used an 85. i put a 90 in and no difference, it ran fine, and cooler, and got me better gas mileage. but my scooter seems to like high jetting. but maybe 90 is fine.

I could upjet from .82 to .85
Going to be running the Elite SR oil pump rather that the restricted S oil pump. No premix though.
**Should I premix some oil in the fuel even after upjetting to 85? (my scooter was originally the Elite S restricted....washer in exhaust head, small jet, restricted variator). I have stock gears with stock 9g rollers....but currently running an un-restricted stock exhaust, prodigy variator, 1.5k center clutch spring and 2k grabber springs.
I guess I'm getting more conflicting information now. Originally I was told I could de-restrict the exhaust, replace variator as well as clutch springs and run an 82 jet with no problems....not having to do any kind of pre-mix.

You do not need to premix if your engine continues to displace 49ccs. The SR pump supplies sufficient oil for that engine to run regardless of carb, jet and pipe - within reason. Honda-san guarantees this...
When the big-bore and/or mini-stroked engine mods are done, then the pump intended to supply 50ccs is no longer giving enough for 72 - 78 - 90 - or 120cc. That's when premix becomes a Real Good Idea. Until then, tune your stock bore with confidence.

So I removed the 2nd tab in the airbox and replaced the main jet with a #88 main jet. I cannot seem to feel any difference between my .82 jet with one tab open versus the .88 with 2 tabs open. Top speed seems to be about the same on flat ground (needle points right at the "F" on the fuel guage.
Any other mods to help it out besides a big bore kit? I have 9g rollers...should I go with 8.5g rollers or 8g ?? How about an aftermarket exhaust?

Since you're testing things out, consider the possibility that the 88 "overshoots" the ideal mixture for the enlarged airbox opening. Check your spark plug for a darker-than-cardboard color and monitor the CHT gauge if you have one. If temps are low and plug is dark, consider trying a # 85 main jet to see if the thrust improves a bit. As you noted in your first post, you won't go from 42MPH to 62 MPH with only an unrestricted box, but you might score a couple MPH more if the engine can gin up an extra pony. There is also the possibility that gearing, not power, is your limiting factor. A bigger rear tire and/or gearing changes to about 9:1 might provide longer "legs" to make the best use of the power you have.

Thanks for the info. I'll give the 85 a shot. The plug seems to have the normal wear and tear....nothing super dark...no oil residue...not soaked in gas either.Wheelman-111 wrote:Greetings:

Any suggestions on a decent priced exhaust for the modifications I have listed? Nothing too loud. Trying to be somewhat conservative on sound.

<update> removed the plate on the variator (until i get aftermarket) and i went from 26 to 30 and then i put in the top speed spark plug the manual recommended and got another mph so im at 31 mph currently. Went to local honda shop and they only have a 64 and 72 jet i was like really? so i have to order one. i want to get the jet so i can do the pipe jet and airbox at once.
