86 honda aero again!
hi there. maybe you guys remember me, i just posted awhile ago in regards to non-working turn signals/rear lights generally.
i went ahead and got a battery (i bought him without one), and hooked that up. plenty of life there, that's for sure! but then i saw smoke.
the fuse (red wire, casing says 7A) was smoking. it was already wrapped in foil - great! so now i plan on replacing that.
BUT. please bear with me here, i am totally new to this but trying to learn! what does it do? what else do i need to check -- could fuse 7A cause my rear lights to be non-working?
thanks again guys, i really appreciate the help.

Re: 86 honda aero again!
Check for breaks in the wiring any thing that could ground out against something. I had the same issue but, found this problem in the wiring by the starter grounding out against the frame. Easy fix. just look around...

Re: 86 honda aero again!
you need a battrey dead or good to complete the curcuit, next with engine running turn signal on listen for a click from relay just like a car, a bad bulb will fail one side so check them.

Bigger issues than just signals not working!

Re: 86 honda aero again!
You have a short somewhere. The easiest way to troubleshoot it is to get a meter or 12 volt test light. Now look at the wiring diagram and disconnect all the items the power goes to. now connect the light or meter between the battery +12 and the wire the fuse is on (put a new fuse in it of course). If light lights or meter moves, you have a short in the wiring harness and good luck finding it. If no light or meter movement, then start reconnecting things one at a time. When the light lights or the meter moves you found the problem. Either fix it or replace it. I would suspect the short was there before because the the PO wrapped the fuse in foil, which is a sure way to find the problem by either the smoke or smoke and fire method. Really rather a stupid and dangerous really.

Re: 86 honda aero again!
i'm going to be doing some research (read: removing plastics and exploring) tomorrow, and i'll be getting the part hopefully later this week, depending on delivery time. you'll all hear back from me about this soon one way or another! meanwhile i'll just be lurking.
thanks again. youre all absolutely fantastic.

What Part? If you ordered a fuse, the proper sized one is available at any auto parts store and even places like Wally World, for a lot less than Honda is gonna charge you.

I think he was making a reference to the National Lampoon's Vacation movie; not about pointing his gun at someone (or you) at Walmart.

Re: 86 honda aero again!
ok! who wants an update?
i picked up a 5 pack of the fuses at an auto parts store. i removed the old one and its terrible foil, hooked the new one right up - and ta da, no smoke even with a connected battery!
i connected the yellow/green wire and the black wire coming from the removable portion of the brake-light to the yellow/green wire and the black wire from the scooter's body (terminology, i'm sorry, i am learning!) and... nothing. there's a green wire from the scooter's body that appears to have no hook-up elsewhere.
where does it go? what does it do? should it have another half?
still no lights. what do i look for next? i just want my baby to work well! i even named him... boss dog.

Did you look for burned wiring? Post some pictures that would help.

The green wire is the ground (you know Green, the earth, the ground). And with these plastic bodied scooters you need ground wires as the body does not supply it.caito wrote:ok! who wants an update?
