Installing the head on a Spree

Hello,

I just finished installing a big bore kit on my 1985 Honda Spree (for the third time) and am not sure if I am putting the head on correctly. There is one side that is flush with the cylinder and another side of the head that extends beyond the cylinder. I think that the longer part (that extends farther) goes towards the carb. If I am putting it on backwards, please let me know. This may explain why I can never get the thing to work very long. Thanks.

The Honda manual Section 6-3 has a photo, but might as well post one... sooner or later I will remember it by "the tab goes on the back right hand side", or "the angled fins go on the fan side".

I am pretty sure that the head is also bored. The first time I ordered the big bore kit it came with a letter saying that the head had to be "milled" (whatever that means). I took it to a garage and one of the mechanics said that he had the machines at home to do it. The next day he brought it back and with a slightly bigger circle. It is ashame that the guy selling these kits on ebay does not explain this until you receive the kit. Also, I looked at the manual for my scooter but could not make out the pictures. The scanned version that I have kinda blurred. Thanks.

did you get the 44mm or the 48mm those head bolts also need to be tourqed down to the right setting

Yes in the manual 6-3 shows the head like this but, 6-0 has it the other way.

Yes in the manual 6-3 shows the head like this but, 6-0 has it the other way.

6.0 is a drawing and never trust a drawing, mainly because an artist drew it. 6.3 is a real picture of an engine, believe it. And again the IPB (Illustrated Parts Breakdown) is a DRAWING, a good one even but it is a drawing, don't trust drawings for assembly purposes.

No problem mouse, glad they are being helpful to the forum community.

I'll get another box of goodies out to you when I go thru all my parts in the shed. Its just been too hot lately

yah..ditto that.. i deal with drawings/blue prints everyday.. they're wrong all day, everyday. lol

I must admit that I fell victim to the artist's drawing for the head as well. I had it on backwards for 3 tanks of gas and had no issues. When I saw this thread the other day, I knew I had made a mistake. Took it all apart today and put the head on correctly. Was nice to see how clean and great everything in the cylinder/head still looked after 3 tanks of gas. My plug was perfect chocolate brown too

Moral of the story - it will run with it on wrong, but I dont know if it would cause long-term damage due to the possibility of it not cooling correctly with the fins in the wrong position. Can anyone confirm?

Mine are all on backwards then.

MY cooling plastics don't really fit the other way around.

I have been running my spree heads the wrong way for over a year now.

Bear is absolutely right. I asked my instructors at school today and they said go with the picture of the assembled bike. Not the drawing. I was also installing them backwards on my Spree w/out a problem though. I fixed mine today.
