Please tell me I don't have a big problem

Post by NickKimosabe »

Scooter: 2001 Elite SR

I cleaned the carb yesterday and once everything was back together it ran like always (about 33mph). Then I decided to plug the extra tab in the air box back up, which resulted in pulling harder and hitting about 38mph. I was very happy that it was finally running like it was when I purchased it a little over a month ago. New exhaust gasket, clean carb, and muffler welded to fix leaks. I drove it to work (approx 12 miles) following my sister in law on her Razz running about 30 all the way there. Then on the way home I was riding alone and was running full speed. About half way home the scooter started to slow down like I was going up a hill, and stayed that way till the next light. Now it only accelerates to 25mph and has a hard time getting there. It seems to be bogging out when I give it gas. I checked the carb settings but with no luck. Not sure what is going on. I also checked to make sure none of the fuel lines or vacuum lines came loose.

Thanks in advance.

On a side note, approx how many tanks of gas should I get in before the oil light comes on? I filled it back up today, seemed pretty low. Maybe my light doesn't even work.

***Update***

I couldn't sleep so I took the carb back off and re cleaned it. Running strong once again. I did notice the air box was a little loose around the carb. Could this have been the culprit?

Forgive me, I am still a :newb:

Yes.. i tried going without an air filter before and couldn't do more than 10 blocks. It gets dirty pretty fast with the stuff on the roads.
Check that your air filter is tight and that it actually works as a good filter.

Quick video. First kick it starts. I was wanting your opinions on idle. Also, should it smoke like that?

reason why the airbox would be loose from teh carburetor, the airbox leads right up to the carburetor. you just tighten the screw with the metal around the carb to get it air tight. if the airbox is screwed on good, it should be on without having to even tighten. maybe move it over, but the airbox tightened to the frame good should point right at the carb. and you migt just have to move it over on it. with the good, im being sarcastic, maybe a 3/4 inch of grab the carb has on the end, you can just move the airbox over. and then when it goes over the carb, tighten it to the frame. then tighten the airbox to the carb to prevent leaks. if it was loose, that's kind of weird. make sure the airbox is mounted good.
yea could the loose airbox make your scooter not run fast? yea it would be running lean and doing that. missing like nuts. don't let the airbox fall off. you don't even have to line up the airbox really, much, if you tighten it on the frame. it just doens't hold on by that snorkel, but make sure you tighten it to the frame, don't overtighten.
and in that video, did you really have to kick that hard? man my scooter must have a weak motor. i can do it with sandals on, huh, uh. it just doesn't seem that hard to kick, you loko like you really kicked it hard.
