Honda Spree: Lost some top end power.

Post by IMiteBeWrong »

So recently I was making my way home from work. It's about a 10 mile straight strip of road. I usually go about 30 - 35mph consistently the whole way. When I was about a mile from home all the sudden bam, my spree putters out and dies. I walked to a parking lot and managed to get it started again.

Now heres my problem:

-since the incident I now can only travel at 25mph maybe 30 down a hill. Also the top end power just isn't the same. A little hesitation when it gets near 27, like its being restricted.

heres the steps I've taken:

-I swapped the carb out with an extra one I have, no change.

-I checked thoroughly for airbox leaks and cant find anything.

-checked the air filter, its clean and oiled.

-changed the spark plug and made sure gap was correct.

-swapped out the CDI for an extra one I had.

-added seafoam to gas tank and a little to the oil tank.

Side note: The day this happened I topped off my gas tank and premixed with some 2 cycle oil. Got distracted by something and dumped more in than I normally do. (nice set of * walking by)

Could have I put too much oil into the gas and caused the lingering issue?

I siphoned all the gas out when i got home and replaced it with fresh gas with seafoam in it. Would it just take a while to clean itself out??

I have noticed some small improvements after a tank of fresh gas with seafoam.

sorry for the long post, I'm just really scratching my head with this one!

Check head bolts for tightness
Check compression.

i'm not saying its why your bike died...in fact, i'm saying it's probably not.
but... if you belt wears too thin, the pulleys cant grip it as well so, after a while, you'll see a bit of loss...from what i understand, this is gradual though.

I'm with TJ, check compression first on this kind of deal.

Forgot to say, I did find the culprit here:

The threads on the carb, where it attaches to the engine, were stripped out on both of the carbs I tried. The carb wasnt tight enough against the engine opening, thus I had a big ugly vaccum leak giving me all my headaches.

Solved my problem by using 1/4-20 instead of the 6mm standard bolts. Fit in there nice and tight.

Just wanted to add a possible fix to the list of possible issues others may have in the future. :)
