1986 spree electrical problem?

I just got a 1986 honda spree NQ50.Which has not been started in about 10 years.I first thing I did was reconditioned the gas tank.Took side panels off and noticied some melted green wires.I proceeded to try to rewire wire these melted wires.
Coming out of the harness there is a thin green wire which is bridged to the oil sensor then to the gas sensor,the goes a little futher and is bridged to the coil then to the rectifier.Is this correct?
there also was a thicker green wire coming from the harness which looked like it went directly to the battery and another thin green wire from the neg side of the battery to the ground on the rectifier is this correct?
The problem is 90% of the time the starter relay just clicks,it does turn over once in awhile but after trying a few times the relay just clicks.
I have checked every componet for resistance and everything checks out,except I get the same reading 8.6 ohms with or without the spark plug cap(book says 3.7-4.5 with cap off).The only odd thing I see is that when I turn the key on the tail light does not go on untill I depress the hand brake and push the start button.Can you help me I'am at a loss at this point it's driving me CRAZY.Thank you in advance for any tips you might have. jamescynowa@yahoo.com-(buserboy)

Green is your ground. Tail should light up with only the key turned on. What condition is the battery in?

Green = ground wire. The ground wire is gonna go everywhere.

The thick Green wire is the ground to the starter motor and if is not attached at the starter that would explain your fried little green wires. They are not big enough to handle the current.

The little green wire from the battery to the regulator/rectifier ground is correct.

Your starter problem sounds like a bad starter solenoid which appears to be making contact only part of the time. To test jumper the contacts in the plug between the RED wire and the RED/WHITE wire. The starter should run. If it does replace the solenoid. If it doesn't, check the wire to the starter. If those are good then start is probably bad.

I'm not sure about your tail light issue but suspect that you have a ground issue or a burnt out tail light and what you are seeing is the brake light.

I have a 86 spree also, when I got it, it also had the green wire melted in spots, I ended up taking the tape off the whole visible part of the harness and just replacing it with a new green wire, the whole length. the voltage regulator was bad, and I suspect it melted the wire because it was "unregulated". Too much juice in the pipe. Somethings gotta give, just happened to be the ground wire.

Thanks for the info I will give these suggestions a try.I have fixed the tail light problem.Is the solenoid built into the starter?or is this a seperate part? Thanks Again

It is separately mounted on the frame. Follow the large wires from the starter and you will find it.
