Newbie Iowa Restrictor

Hello,

First time poster.

I bought my first scooter tonight. It is a 86 Spree Iowa edition. I have been reading on here about the restrictors but I am having a time finding one on this bike. I pulled the exhaust and there wasn't a washer in there to drill out. I pulled the carb but I really don't know what I am looking for. It doesn't seem to have anything restricting the fuel flow. The carb is an after market that he replaced the original one with.

I would like to get this bike over 25 but not sure where to go from here.

First off that is not the stock carb, so someone has fiddled with this scooter before. The drilled muffler also points to this.

To fine out why this scooter does only 25 mph you need to start with the basics.

Compression test first.

Then pull the float bowl off the carb and find out what the main jet is. Also you need to acquire a carb spacer to go between the carb and the manifold. It keeps heat out of the carb.

You also meed to get the original air box with filter back on to the scooter. This is probably why your performance is so dismal.

That is all an Iowa spree will do, 26 if you are lucky.

Not if it is derestricted and this one has no restrictor in the exhaust and even has an aftermarket carb. So your contention is incorrect. You can derestrict an Iowa and make it go as fast as a non-Iowa Spree.

I can do a compression test but I don't think that is what is holding it up. It zips up to 25 no problem and then just hits a wall.

What size should the main jet be?
There is a quarter inch spacer in there, not sure if that is what you are talking about.

The orginal airbox with filter is on the scooter, it just isn't in the picture because I have the carb pulled off the bike.

Is the only place that they put the restrictor in the exhaust on these? If that is the case I can stop looking for the restrictor and look more towards tuning of the carb / fuel flow. Or is the restrictor more inside the exhaust whre I should be lookig to put a different exhaust on it all together?

The Iowa was restricted with a washer in the exhaust and a smaller main jet (a #65 as opposed to a #68 in the standard Spree). Remove the washer, which has been done and change the jet to a #68 and the Iowa is no longer an Iowa Spree.

The problem I see is the non-stock carb. Is it as big as the stock carb was? Smaller, what jetting does it have? Why was it changed? The Spree is tuned from the inlet opening in the air box to the outlet at the end of the exhaust pipe and screwing with it can really degrade performance unless you know what you are doing.

I don't know anything about the nonstock carb. The PO told me that when he bought it the carb was missing so he replaced it with this carb. He got the carb from an online scooter site but couldn't remember where. He also mentioned that I might be better off putting a manual petcock in it to get the flow of gas to be constent to the carb but I'm not really sure that would help it.

Maybe I should look into getting a stock carberator for it. Is there any place that sells carbs for these or am I better off going on ebay?

Look om the flange of the carb and there should be so letters and maybe numbers. Then again they can be on the carb body. Some like PA 54 or whatever. Then we can get an idea of what it is.

Change the clutch belt with a brandy new one. My scoot did 25 all day (non-Iowa) after I changed the clutch belt it was doing 33 on the flat and 25 up hill no problem. I assume the your scoot runs ok? as long as it runs good at all throttle settings I would'nt bother with all the other stuff.

I will have to take a look at the belt and see what kind of shape it is in. There are a few new parts on the bike like tires and brakes etc, so I don't know if that was replaced or not.

Here is the info I could find on the carb. Looks like it is just the company name and then down by the zip tie is the manufacture date of April of 2010 so it is a new carb. I couldn't find any other markings on it.Take a look at the pic and see if it tells you anything.

Other than the fact that it won't go over 25 the thing runs great. I will be taking a look at the belt tomorrow and see if it needs that replaced.

I was doing some searching but I can't seem to find any place that sells the belts online. Are these a standard size I can get anywhere or do Honda dealers keep them in stock?

Also I plugged the hole in the exhaust and I found three holes drilled in the top of the air box that I am going to cover up and see if that makes any difference.

Just an update. I put a new belt in it and now I am up to 28ish mph. I guess I am going to have to start looking closer at the carb.
