Runs badly

Post by buserboy »

I have a 1986 honda spree nq 50.Gas was leaking from the carb overflow tube.Ordered a float kit (did not know the little valve did not come in the kit) anyways i replaced the float.Carb is not leaking, but it seems to want to stall out and bogs down when you give it gas.any ideas what maybe wrong? I tried setting the idle but goes from very high to very low rpm's.Thank you inadvance.

Is the air filter in good shape? If it isn't and they usually aren't, replace it with a new one. Honda has them for as cheap as anyone. Is the air box (what the filter is in) complete and seals properly? If not make it so as these scooter motors do not run above idle without a good filter and a sealed air box and tube between the carb and air box. Running it without this will lean the motor out and eventually melt the piston.

Went back out and double checked everything.Air box cover a little loose so I tightened it.Let engine run for about a half hour and it would go from normal idle to very high idle without touching the throttle it would run high for about a minute then go back to normal. Then gas starting leaking again.Could it be the float valve since that is the only thing I have not replaced on the carb? Thanks

You need to change the needle and preform this proceedure.

OK, I got to work on carb replaced neddle valve in carb.Gas not leaking but very hard to start and when it does start it runs for a few minutes then dies.It now stays at a steady idle but for some reason it dies.At times when you first start it and give it some throttle it just bogs out.Any ideas? Thanks, buserboy

These things are cold blooded as all get out. No throttle until several minutes after starting this time of year. I usual start the thing, the put on my jacket, helmet and gloves the roll the scooter out of the shop before I try any throttle application.

The dying thing may be a bad bystarter. It does not heating up and shutting the extra fuel off, which floods the motor.

Yes it will start, but shortly the engine will load up and die because the bystarter (choke) will alway be on, hence to much fuel.

The 1985 and 1986 bystarters are suppose to be identical. If the plug is different it may not be the original.

Remember that the bystarter needle doesn't move much (something like 1/16") and takes 30-120 seconds to cycle from cold.

Dying after 30-120 second of idle is indicative of a clogged idle jet and functioning bystarter. Bike runs on enrichment circuit until bystarter closes it, then bike dies due to lack of fuel from blocked idle circuit.
