Electrical question regarding 2 and 3 pin flashers...

I've recently coverted my Ruckus over to a Zuma motor and all I have left(besides tuning) is wiring in the turn signals.

The portion of the harness which plugs into the flasher relay is 3-wire now since I am using the Zuma harness and my old Ruckus Harness was only 2-wire.

I dont know much about electronic flashers and relays, but enough about wiring to wire in my headlights, taillights, and controls.

So my question is besides being 2-wire and 3-wire what are the differences between these flashers? I know I will need a variable load one for L.E.D turn signals, but anything else I should know?

Also what wire goes to what pin on the flasher relay? I have the diagrams for both Ruckus and Zuma electronics if I need to refer to them.

Thanks for the link Bear, but I would also like to understand how it works and what each pin connects to on the harness.

The 2 pin unit uses a bimetal system to mechanically open the contacts. The 3 pin uses a electronic timer to open the contacts. The third pins supplies full time power to the timer It is a lot like the difference between the 3 wire and 2 wire fuel tank sender on Sprees.

I think I might be getting it.

So it's function is for a dual filament bulb?

The flasher does not care what kind of bulb it is operating. The third wire is for the operation of the internal timer.

Pin labeling and connections varies somewhat between even flashers of the same pin count. Enough a one pic will not cover all. Good idea to check the LED flasher with your wiring diagram.

This is the flasher Im dealing with. I have one ground wire, one + off ignition switch and One wire to the signals? Which goes where?

X is 12 volts from the switch.

P is ground

L is to the + side of the lights

Ok did that and the rear turn signals flashed faster than usual and the front signals didnt turn on. Also the wire hooked to X began to smoke and got hot to the touch...

What you think?

I also need to mention that its not using stock harness. There are 2 harness' fused together with an 8 pole relay

If you are getting smoke, you are not wired like the diagram shows.

The problem is the wiring is funky on the scooter. I followed what you told me on the prior post, but it didnt work with my config.

I really dont want to break down the harness an trace each wire so any ideas on what can cause the symptoms Im having?

Ill try reversing the power wires on the switch and see if that does anything...

-- I'd start by getting all signal lamps working --
If you have installed your LED's into the front/rear already, you can pull the flasher relay, and connect one of your old blinker bulbs across the "X" and "L" connection points. That will avoid the 'Hot X' wire problem, at worst, only the lamp will light. Then track down the wiring for the front signals.

-- Re: "X" wire getting hot
After getting all the lamps lighting properly, go after that hot wire and flashing rate problem.
1) The "X" pin should be going to fused power. If not put one in (LED's will be fine with a fuse of 2A rating or less) and see if it blows. If you are testing with incandescent lamps, use 6A or so..
2) If the fuse blows - Some flashers use the "P" terminal to light a Pilot lamp, and switch +12v from the "X" terminal to "P" at the flashing rate. You might try running without a connection to the "P" terminal
