Hot Rod 85 Aero 50cc build

Post by ScooterTweaks »

Hey guys! Just picked up a decent 85 Aero for $200 bucks with title. I am the second owner!!! Its got all of 304.3 miles on it! It was under a heavy tarp in a huge shed. All the lights work, horn works, electric start works, and the motor turns over no problem. Even fired up with a gas/oil gravity feed to the carb. Ran all on its own from idle to full throttle. I am very very happy. It was involved in what looks like a low speed tump. The left side took the grunt: front left blinker lens, lower side panel, and left rear blinker lens and rear cover between the blinkers. The inner cover with the glove box has some cracks from hitting the blinkers. I found a good inner for less than $30 shipped and it's on the way. I am looking for at least the rear left blinker lens and the cover between the two rear lenses. I have found a whole set for the Honda Vision which appears to be the same bike in Canada but can't say if it will work till I buy it for $45 shipped. Take the plunge??? Sounds scary damnit! But, I have plans...

Plans:

1) Obviously get the bike running and riding. Then continue collecting the needed parts to replace/fix the cracks and lighting needs.
2) Drop in my already built 87 SE50 engine which is capable of 54mph.
3) Paint all body work an even flat black
4) wheels a gloss red
5) white wall tires
6) re chrome all chrome parts and polish a few parts to a mirror finish
7) custom pin striping following the old hot rod theme
8) custom wood floor board with fire scorched ScooterTweaks logo and gloss sealed

I will not start on any of the body or paint till I have all the parts. The polishing and chrome will come after finding all the lenses and covers etc. However I am very excited about this bike. A solid 45-50mph scooter with good cruising speeds and looking very very old school hot rod with the paint scheme and wood floor.

I am looking high and low for these parts so any help is wanted/needed, and so so appreciated!

Parts needed:

left front blinker
left rear blinker lens
rear cover between rear blinker lenses
lower left panel under floor board

The rest I will just try to fix.

Not so bad really. Comments, parts, general ideas let me know. Thanks and keep watching as I will post more pics as I clean it and get the body back to shape.

got some body panels in the mail today and should be getting my rear lights soon. after i get my 84 spree running this bike will get stripped down so i can wash everything off and start welding, body work, painting, and wiring. the motor will remain mostly stock during the initial build and paint process. i am currently looking for the desired wood for the floor board and a good deal on 3x10 or 3.5x10 white walls.

as i get things cleaned up i will take pics. hope you all enjoy!

Sounds awesome! I love themed builds. Want to sell that low mileage motor?

sorry guys right now i wont be selling anything from the bikes. but as soon as i decide to or IF i will post everything with pics in the for sale/trade section.

as of right now my bikes have mileage as stated below:
87 elite: 8700miles on stock engine
85 aero: 304 miles on stock engine
86 aero: 670 miles on stock engine
85 aero motor from ebay: 2700 stated miles on stock engine
87 elite motor from ebay: 780 stated miles on stock engine

as of right now i have these five motors, four of which have low miles, to play with and experiment for greater output. once i find an optimal solution i have two brand new, NOS, cranks ready to be crammed into a clean and ready case!

i will be attempting to work on the rat rod in the evenings this week to start the project. anyone know if the headlight housing from an elite will fit the 85+ aero? i want it for the flushed blinkers. i want to rid of the front blinkers on this aero.

more parts in the mail today. had time to play with the spree but only had more problems so it may go on the back burner so i can focus on this project. should have time this week to strip it down and wash the crap out of it. i will take a few before and afters. also got some neat stuff i dont want to share just yet, maybe after its all installed! 8)

once cleaned and at least started and running a bit i will start sanding down the panels to accept primer and paint. i have decided to run the lights more or less stock. i have a few surprises some of you may really like on this one. look for pics towards the end of the week.
