Why even ask if you know people is going to tell you not to use gear oil.if your asking ,then you don't know.use the right oil.if you think you know more then what the honda engineers know, you wouldn't be on here asking questions on tuning your bike and asking what brand oil to use.so its obvious you don't know.use the right oil.

I second that butter crisco.
If it don't fit, force it. If it breaks, it needed to be replaced anyway.

KY jelly all the way in that trans case. Non greasy feel, no residue, and gears will love you for being considerate. Or is that girls.... Gears - girls; same thing.

Good luck with whatever ya choose, dude. ** all lubes are not considered equal, though. **

-be sure to follow Honda's EXACT instructions when it comes to 2-stroke engine oil for a stock engine.
For a modified engine, follow the experts *here* on the forum. You will learn this is the most helpful Honda scooter forum that exist. :2thumbs:
Bear and Baka would not steer your engine wrong; but you have to listen!!

And if honda says to use 10w-40 thats fine but heres something i found that you guys might maybe reconsider using 10w-40

What's with the transmission oil?

Believe it or not, your Honda and Yamaha scoots do have a small transmission. It's hidden away in a small area near the rear wheel. Don't forget about the tranny oil! There is only about 200cc of oil here - a very small amount. Most scooters use standard high quality engine oil and some take gear oil. If your scooter takes engine oil, it should be changed fairly frequently. The gears put a lot of shear stress on the oil, reducing its effectiveness over time. It is definitely a pain to change this oil and add the new oil, but it must be done. If not, the oil will eventually turn to a thick dark, molasses like stuff. Your bearings and gears will be very unhappy, and they will eventually fail. I once bought a Elite 150 from a nice lady who didn't change the tranny oil. The tranny on this scooter sounded horrible when it was ridden. She was lucky it had not locked up the rear wheel when she was riding, which would have probably caused a big crash. I bought it for $20 because she didn't want to have the tranny fixed. When I took the transmission apart, it was really in bad shape. Several gears and a few of the bearings were destroyed. I got it going again, but the cost of labor and parts was over $200. All because $0.25 of oil had not been changed... oh wait does it say that your gears will eventually fail if you use 10w-40...hhmmm maybe you guys should use your head instead of following the manuals all the time, and before calling people stupid....I THINK IM GONNA STICK TO THE GEAR OIL..lol

BAKARACER AND BEAR PLEASE DO NOT POST ON MY WALL'S ANYMORE ...PLEASE I WILL REPEAT MYSELF IF I HAVE TO...DONT CARE TO HEAR YOUR ADVISE anymore after todays post
THANK YOU,GOOD DAY! :geekdance:

What brand of gear oil should I use for my gears?

Post by 76duece »

By coming to this forum asking a simple question like what gear oil to use, shows your somewhat rookie status as a scooter guy. Who knows, you might be very well versed in other area's of mechanical fun, like cars, boats, *, you could be a plane mechanic for all I know. But a simple gear oil question for a scooter, is just that, simple. I could see if we where out doing some crazy endurance race or extreme motorsports, but we are just cruising around on small engined scooters. Sure, some of the guys here can be a little bit much sometimes, but most who have responded to this thread, you should listen to. Coming here fighting whatever advice you get is not going to help you. You seem to really want to use some fancy gear oil in a scooter. That's fine, waste your money. But if you just use what honda advises and change it when they advise, I'm sure that little tranny on the spree or elite will last an eternity(and be efficient) In my opinion, honda builds some the most well designed, reliable machines out there, from lawn mowers to race cars, and have been for a long time. They know what they are doing. So stop starting battles with guys here, go get yourself some 10/30 or 40, whatever honda recomends, and start enjoying your scooter.

"TOO STUPID TO LEARN FROM THE MISTAKES OF OTHERS!"

Then he also thinks he is smarter than Honda's engineers, I foresee a whining post about lack of performance and/or a blown engine.
