Michigan registration

Post by killerpancake »

I live in michigan. I've never registered a moped i've had before but i'll be taking this one to ohio on a LOOOOONG moped ride, anyway, i just want to know, do you need the VIN number of the moped to get it registered in michigan? I assume you do, which brings me my next question, where would i find the VIN on an 85 honda spree?
Thanks in advance.
If it don't fit, force it. If it breaks, it needed to be replaced anyway.

You Vin# is under your frame. Under the foot rest. It's a metal Plate.
And the only thing you get in Michigan is a sticker for the back. I think its like $10-$20
I'm not sure

I think this is what you need.
Title If possible.
Drivers/moped license.
Vin#
Name of scoot & The Cc of the bike.

Now I'm not really sure if they changed it or not but u can find out what u need by calling your local department.
hope this helps.

You will need a bill of sale with vin on it or the registration which has the vin on it.

+1
Been through this a few times, like anything else at SOS it can differ depending on the day or who is helping you.

You have to prove ownership, i.e. a signed registration from the previous owner, a bill of sale with the VIN or possibly a title. If you are doing a new registration, they will probably do a title search, which usually requires a couple of hours or a day. They may also have you sign an affadavit stating that your scoot is a legally defined "moped" in MI, <50cc, <2.0 bhp, <30mph top speed etc.

The registration is $15 for 3 years, transfer is $10 plus sales tax on the purchase price.

The vin tag is on the front neck of your frame right behind the front fender!

the only thing that's going to be a problem is the bill of sale, the previous owner moved to ohio, and i don't even know his name.

I wouldn't get too creative with the name.
If you do not know who the previous owner is, the SOS will have to run the VIN to make sure it is not stolen. This can take a few hours or all day depending on which SOS you go to.

As long as the scooter has not been reported stolen, it is not hard to get the registration sticker in MI.

You don't need to remember his name. It just needs to be not stolen.

MI DMV asked me for bill of sale on 1st bike I took in.

I say "I was given the bike, the owner moved away, and I don't know his name." (all true)

"We still need a BOS"

"OK, can you give me a blank one?"

"Sure, here you go."

I proceeded to fill it out, in front of them, from a John Smith for $1 consideration, and signed it. Then I handed it over. She shrugged and registered the bike after checking that it wasn't stolen. They just want their paperwork, at the end of things.

Your milage may vary; I don't look like someone that just stole the bike out of an alley. Point is, this is not a tightly regulated market. Just write the thing up before you go in and be done with it. Have your brother write it up if it makes you feel better. Then you can honestly say you didn't sign the BOS yourself.
