Don't bother with LED's...

Post by clsmooth »

In order to try and save battery life and to be better seen on the road, the goal was to replace what bulbs I could with LED ones. With the exception of the headlight, which I found a crystal white bulb for 8)

Putting an 1157 LED bulbs for the brake light works fine, and that's about it. I picked up 2 pairs of white LED 194 bulbs for all 4 turn signal bulbs, and I had no luck. The LEDs themselves, replacing the bulbs, don't have enough resistance that the relay to make them flash is expecting. The LEDs come on but don't flash. I even tried some wiring and put regular bulbs in-line on the power wire before the LED, to simulate the resistance, and still no dice. Despite the simplicity of the turn signal system, it's still very finicky.

I did however get the LED bulbs I got for the extra fog lights I installed to work. Which is probably for the best cause those would've sucked the juice back consideralby. To compare, I use a special bulb in the small fog lights I got called MR11. Off the shelf at a hardware store, they come in 35W, 10W or 5W each. Combined the LED MR11's draw 1W.

The only other bulb I was able to replace and have work with any luck was I got a blue LED 194 bulb to light up the gauge cluster. I think these bulbs work only as direct illumination, not meant for flashing.

So to add to the visibility of my bike, especially at night, I picked up an amber and a red 'tire fly'. Those lights that screw onto the tire valves on your rims. Around my neck of the woods, they're technically legal cause I got 'proper' coloured ones.

make sure u run a resister from wire to LED for blinkers...LEDs arnt meant for direct power, u gotta use a resistor or u will overheat and destroy them.

A friend of mine believes he can modify the relay somehow to be functional with LED's. But that'll be a project for another day

You need to replace the flasher unit for one compatible with LED lights. If you run a resistor, you're still wasting current, just in heat instead of light.

The resister defeats the purpose of the LEDs, to save power. Get an electronic flasher, problem solved.

i ran LED's into my front reflector on my spree so they go along with the turn signals. i just ran them parallel with the stock bulbs.
If it don't fit, force it. If it breaks, it needed to be replaced anyway.

Yes that would work.

But if you take the bulb out of that circuit, it would not.
