cleening up my spree

Post by Thugorp »

Hello again, Honda Spree and Elite_50 forum. I once again need some(probably) simple advice. The weather is changing for the better again here in Chicago, and it is time to pull out the scooter and put away the gas guzzler, so here is the thing, last time I drove it for more than a minute was last fall(at the end of a full summer and fall of hard driving) it felt like it was pretty much being, "held back," by something. It occurred to me that it is probably all, "gunked up," on the in-side. So here is the question, other than the obvious visible gunk on the outside of the mettle(once the frame is off), and whatever is inside the carburetor what else should I be cleaning, and how do I clean it? I am willing to put some good solid work into this, just tell me what to do and how to do it. Thanks :-).

O.k. wow, I hadn't even thought of the, "what with," part of this question.

but see... what constitutes the, "in-side," and how to get to it, that is what I still don't quite know. any help would be VERY appreciated. thanks. :-)

Sea Foam is poured into the gas tank and does it's thing while you run the engine. I use it in every other to every 4th tank of gas. If you really want to clean the inside of the engine, go to the local Mercury Outboard dealer and get some Engine Tuner in the spray can. Follow the directions on the can. The stuff works great. If you opt to use the engine tuner, change the spark plug afterwards, it tends to screw up the plug.

O.k. thank you, now one more thing. How DO I clean the carb.?

also, when I bought the thing last year there was some part of it that the man I bought it from said he put over his grill to burn up all of the excess carbon. Was this part the exaust? If not what part was it and how do I do it corectly?

also, does sea foam reduce the power output or the over all driveing speed?

The SeaFoam will clean the inside of the carb unless that it is so dirty the engine will not run right to start with. If the performance is off to start with then the carb needs to be removed and cleaned following the instructions in Wikispreedia. Oh and SeaFoam will not reduce performance.

A new spark plug each spring is a good general maintenance practice and they are cheap.

The carbon removal this was grilling the exhaust to clean it out, that's the exhaust pipe and muffler.

Thank you Bear very much. :worship: I am pretty sure my scooter would have stoped working long ago if not for you and the other members of this amazing sight.

Sorry I know double posts are a no-no on most forums so I will promise not to do it again... I hope this is less annoying than a hole new thread just for this though. O.k. here it goes, could someone give me a walk-through for the grilling of the exhaust? or post a link to one?

Thank you very kindly.

I hope this is the last thing I have to ask, I am having a bit of trouble finding, "engine tuner," but is, "Power tuner," the same thing?

Yeah, I just checked and they changed the name to "Power Tune Engine Cleaner" since I retired.

Thank you again

O.k. at this point I once again feel that I should pretty much be paying you but...

I looked up the directions for cleaning the carb... I didn't make it all the way through the, "dis-assembly," section yet but already I see a problem, I don't really know what any of the terms(names-of-parts) refer too. I have no doubt that I could figure it out if I opened it up and read the directions as I looked. My problem is that I am the sort of person who would think that I could(and in fact did) figure it out, take apart the scooter, put it back together, and try and start it only to realize that I don't know what a screwdriver is(I do but you get my point). So here is the question, is this job as difficult as it sounds from reading the wiki entry? or is it as simple as I hope it is?

If the former, ... HELP ... please.

Thank you very much again. I just went out and bout myself the various sprays and liquids you suggested. Hopefully the resources you have shown me will be enough for me to get everything done. I will take this up tomorrow when It will hopefully be warmer out.

Thank you so much again. :-)
