top speed question.

Post by scottorious »

I have an 86 aero 50 that i recently got, It has 7000 miles on it and when I got it I realized that it has been running without any sort of airbox/filter and I dont know how long that has been. I crafted my own fairly simple air filter http://i1111.photobucket.com/albums/h46 ... 260402.jpg I also installed a variator I got from daywot with 9 gram rollers as well as put on 90/90-10 michelin s1 tires. I weigh 195 pounds and I can only manage 38 mph according to my gps. Is 38 a decent speeed for a chunk like myself as well as spinning the much larger tire. Or is my filter system running the motor a little lean? Or are my 9 gram rollers too light? or would you say its a combination of all of the above? I looked at the variator itself and could see that there was a space of about 1/4 inch between where the top of the belt had been and the outside of the variator. Im a noob to tuning these things so any suggestions are very much appreciated. This thing is really for my 100 pound gf but I have not been letting her drive it and screwing with it myself. Im sure she would fly on the thing, but I want it to fly with me on it!

7000 is kind of alot and plus with it running without the stock airbox, who knows if it didnt already seize. do a compression test and see what it says. plus with your weight, the rollers are to heavy. see what it does with your girl riding it.

i would get the proper airfilter from your local honda dealer, and try to lighten the rollers, 8.5-9 is the stock weight. idk try 7.5-8 and see what happens, d/l the manual from this site and read it, change the spark plug and follow the settings for your carb in the manual.

Ok I will have her see what she can do. If I lighten the rollers more do I need a lighter spring as well?

You need to do a plug chop to check your mixture (it is very lean I am sure) but unless you already up jetted the carb to deal with how lean that air filter made your engine, like baka said, it is amazing you haven't seized the engine already. These engines were designed as a unit from the air inlet on the air cleaner box to the tip of the exhaust pipe and when you change things like you did you have to retune the engine which you didn't. The stock Aero is on the lean side to start with and to run well need to be up jetted.

in what range should I start with the jets. I have a #60 drill bit here which I think ends up being like a 101 jet or something and since I have no use for the stock 82 jet any longer I thought about just drilling it out. Would that be way to huge to the point that it would run like crap?

85 is the best option I have found. you need the stock airbox.

does anyone have a line on a complete airbox. The items on ebay are only the inner portion.

Se50 or SE50p box will work as well if you cannot find an aero one.

well It seems I found out exactly what my problem is. I did a compression test and what I got was 50 psi. That would make sense as to why running without a proper airbox didnt burn it up, because its already been burned up. Guess that means a BBK is headed this way.
