Brad, here's the "Link":
Of this I am certain. On Bakaracer's advice, I've begun "Pre-tuning" my OKO 26's air screw before mounting up. It's within a very narrow range; 1.5 turns out for cooler mornings and 1.75 for the warmer afternoon ride home. Besides the palpable improvement in mid-throttle response, I've noticed that when I fail to turn it in that quarter-turn, my temps are about 25 degrees higher in the morning than when I do.
Bear you're right, we're posting uncharted and untested mods as fact. However that's mentioned in the post, and anyone attempting to duplicate or refine the process is thereby notified.

You are doing an apples and orange comparison here. The PA series carbs have a low speed and a main jet circuit. Hence the issue with the too small pilot circuit. However the OKO and PB series of carbs have 3 fuel circuits. Idle, midrange or pilot and main jet. In this case the pilot is adjustable (changeable is a better word) and adds it's fuel flow at just off idle to WOT. But changing the idle mixture will still not effect anything above 1/4 throttle at best.

What all is done to it? How's takeoff?

Here's some of how I got 40mph out of a spree. Err... 42.6 on a GPS.
http://www.hondaspree.net/phpBB3/viewto ... =8&t=14539
Here's a neat little trick I found to overcome the bogging from to amount of pulley mod needed to brake 38mph or so. 38mph(gps) is the speed at which I had to start lowering my idle speed to not engage the clutch at idle, because the pulley mod changes the engagement point of the rear pulley as it speeds up in relation to the engine. The result it has on takeoff is horrendous.

With 3k grab springs in a dio clutch and bell assembly swapped onto the stock spree pulley, it then became possible to take off without pushing with a top speed of 42mph (gps). It revs to about 9800rpm before running out of steam on flat ground. I think if I was willing to push the bike up to 10mph or so, I could go a bit faster, but the rear pully is almost bottomed out with the stock size belt.

And it had a good bit of portwork. (I should have taken pics of it clean, this was after 4000 miles of riding)

I figure when I rebuild it, I'll make the port even more agressive and try to wring more rpm out of it. If I can run a steady 10.5k I'd be happy  That might get me to 45-47mph... If I can get it to spin up that fast :|

Mine was 100% stock and it hit 39mph, that was also when it had really low miles. Now it goes right around 36mph on a good day it will go a little faster.

...on the spreedometer? This is 42mph, or 50 according to the gage.

I admire how this has gone on, this long, without devolving into a name calling session. Nice work guys!

My 2 cents:

- That is a early Spree speedo, on whatever year bike, which showed 40. Which is funny, b/c the early bikes were the slowest.
- I've heard random reports of 40 MPH spree ever since the board started. They are invariably the last year (87). My top speed ever personally observed was on a '86 that would do 35 MPH on flat ground.
- Have also heard, on one or two occasions, Spree running without the airbox just fine. Seems these were always the later engines too. As I've said before, I don't fundamentally understand why they won't run like this...
- Even if the new to you bike was not modded by you, it doesn't mean someone else didn't. I've found all sorts of surprise on inspection of bikes. Recall that these are over 25 years old. That's a long time to go without tinkering by someone.

I would stick a $20 K&N pod filter on the bike and run it like that if you want. It will maintain the short intake tract and keep you from sucking up sand and dirt. They can be special ordered from any auto shop, or bought elsewhere (eBay comes to mind.)

I think its safe to say that the GPS readings are the most accurate when gauging speed...

Are those 40mph readings GPS verified?

I never used a gps so I don't know for sure, but I have rode side by side with a car and also other spree's and have always flew past all my friends when out riding. So I'm pretty sure it was 39mph or close to it. But like I said that was when it had low miles like under 200 mi. on it, Now it runs about 36 mph and has about 3,500 mi., But I have also gained 30 pounds or so, so maybe that's way it slowed down. I bought it with 64 mi. and it was and is 100% stock.

I own a retired cop car with a certified speedometer and even it reads different depending on the brand of tires or how new they are. So a car speedometer sucks for measuring speed. *, my stock truck speedometer reads 4 mph high. The GPS, especially the newer ones read at least 50 times more accurate than any car speedometer. Or get a cop to radar you. Otherwise your numbers are not gonna be accepted here.

I'll take a ride when it gets a little warmer here and see what I get, But I do know its faster than your average spree. I have owned a ton of them and this one has always been fastest on flat ground.
