Greetings:

Rings are "broken"? Sorry if this sounds elementary, but rings have a split to permit installation and expansion.

I would expect a broken ring to fall off the piston in at least 2 chumks upon withdrawal from the cylinder.

No, no, I mean split into several pieces. I fished all of them out, though. They were stuck onto the piston with some kind of... goo.

Yes.

Good, that means you may be able to get by with a rinse and not redo the lower end. Now check your cylinder and head for wear as well as the rotating assembly. That will tell you if the engine is even worth rebuilding to you or if you would rather just replace it.

And this just goes to show why a compression check when you started troubleshooting this problem would have saved everyone one a lot of time. This is also the reason for no start.

Ah, sorry about that. I just had some kind of weird fear about doing anything to the engine when I started.
Anyway, as far as the Spree's going, I'm going to pick up a big-bore kit and then go from there. I intended to do that anyway, just now it makes sense since I understand what it does now.

Plus I have to drill out the seized screws that snapped off when I took the cylinder head off. Man, this thing has seen a lot of weird treatment.

So I was cleaning up the carb, and a little bit of wax fell out of the slot the bystarter (?) goes into. Should I replace that?

You can NOT replace the wax, it is not available anywhere. The bystarter is sold as a unit and the only serviceable parts are the plugs on then end of the wires.

Awwright. Got a new bystarter in, did some bodywork, installed a BBK-- here it is in its test-fitted glory. Everything is nice and gasketed. I'll post again once I've hooked everything back up.
