98 elite sr budget build questions

Post by maxiped77 »

Ok got a killer $200 deal on a clean 98 elite sr off of CL in michigan. Its got about 2000 miles on it and needs a new top end . It was purpose bought to build a mild rider for playing around on camping trips and such due to its light weight and ease of loading up to travel. I have a built zuma that rocks, but its big to travel with. So that said here is a list of parts I've gotin on the cheap or had from previous builds.

Tecnigas next /r expansion chamber to hack and weld
oko 21mm carb new from a diff. build that didn't happen
Uni pod filter
Met rear rim and stock tire
Vari. from a stock china clone scooter

Heres what parts I'm looking at getting with my budget.

50mm B.B kit with gears from Taz
intake and reeds from ebay, thinking Daywot
Cheap racing cdi ebay

I will clean up the ports, polish exhuast and tranfers on the kit. I was wondering about raising the exhaust port a little (a ring width)? Any one played with this kit?

Also thoughts on a variator, honda clone, kelly or other on the cheap? And belt size?
And last ? for any one running close to this set up. What jets are you running? I'm in michigan and ride in 60- 85 degree weather.

Thanks in advance on any help/thoughts on this build

Clutch springs are the one thing everyone has. I would just get them the same place you get your intake or vari to save on the shipping charges.

If you have a china scoot variator I'd just run that. Close enough to Keli, especially on a tight budget.

I dont know If I would raise the exhaust port. I would look more at the intake ports, look at the castings where the fuel charge moves up, clean It all up and make it flow nice. From the cylinder bace both up and down the sides of the skirt are all good places to clean up. If you want to raise the intake port no more than 1mm would be safe. also make sure to dry mount it and look at the intake ports, all performance cylinders have the intake ports open lower than the piston head at BDC. They are open down to the first ring, by the looks of it, my guess is it helps for fuel charge flow. As far as the exhaust make it as glassy and polished as you can. The intake you want good smooth flow but leave it a tad rough. Dont go over 140psi compression so play with head gaskets, and milling, with a tabele belt sander if you have to.

Just my two bits
