intermitant great running

Post by fizzle »

my spree runs great for maybe ten minutes. and then stalls out. then will only idle.
it seriously suprised me how well it ran when i first started it.
and it accellerated right up to 25 mph.
ran steady.
then it started to sputter after a few minutes.
then it would only idle - if i were to give it gas it would stall.
i cleaned the carb and it ran great again - died again.
now its leaking out the side hole.
not the top one but the one that comes down on the side of the bowl.
is that just an overflow -
and does anyone else have a sticky float?
any ideas how to make this better - reliable?
thanks

You need to clean the carb first. Dirty carbs will sometimes do this, but they'll only run 2-3 minutes before they die, which makes me wonder if you're overheating. Does your engine have all the plastics and fan, and is there oil in the tank?

howdy,
yeah i've got all the plastic srouds -
i've done some carb cleaning a few times, and it idles great - which usually that little idle jet gets clogged,
but i think it might be getting to much fuel -
i'm going to clean it agian right now - but its really weird
how it will run great and then not at all.
but yeah
thanks again
i'll try cleaning,
any other ideas will help
stay safe

i cleaned the carb again - it didn't seem dirty - but i gues they only due the first time.
and then i put it back together - oh i cleaned the float needle seat - incase there was a spec of dirt keeping it open. -
i put it back together and it ran great - but now sometimes it dies at idle.
which is strange, but not a big deal cause it will start right up again.
but i'm going to ride it more - try to get it to even out. -
it hasn't been riden in years.
thanks for your help.

I have to clean my carb every spring; even draining the bowl over the winter it still clogs up.

Wow I just posted another topic on this problem. Mine is doing exactly what your is doing. I start it up run around for maybe 10 minutes with good power then it just starts bogging out really bad until I shut it off and let it cool down.

Keep me posted if you figure anything out.

I have also cleaned my carb out like twice this month.

Would that make it run really rich when warmed up? My plug looks hot and dry. It is definately bogging out like its starving for fuel.

That sounds like a dead oiler... get some 32:1 premix into the tank ASAP and drain and clean the oiling system if you haven't.

Either that or you're leaning out, which means you've probably got an air leak in the intake tract or are missing the air filter. Equally hard on the engine.

When the bystarter goes, it runs really rich, and hot restarts become a problem.

I premixed this tank with an oz of 2 stroke oil. I think the oiler is working but Im not sure how well.

I played with the needle clip settings. On the richest setting it ran a little better for ten minutes or so then started bogging out again. The plug is quite a bit blacker so its running richer but still bogging out.

Im thinking it could be bystarter related.

I also tried taping half the intake off. Still boggs out when warm

The bystarter can be checked out by itself; do that first.

The bystarter's out of the picture after 30 seconds or so. If it's taking 10 minutes to get a problem, you've got an overheating issue of some sort. I'm betting it's an air leak based on your symptoms.

Check o-rings on thermal decoupler and bystarter for condition, and seal to crankcase on the manifold. Check airbox condition and filter.

How's your exhaust, clean and light or dirty. Drilled out?

How's the fan cover and shroud look?

I think I might try running with the bystarter unplugged and see what happens. Im not sure on its condition because it does extend out about 1/8 of inch but it takes a while and it ohms out at about 100ohms.

Im not sure if the compression is too low when hot because its not hard to start at all. Even when its running like crap, it will fire right over.

All the fan shrouds are in place, Air box is stock, Could weak spark be causing this? Maybe its getting wet with unburned fuel from too much full throttle?

I think I might go track down a couple O rings and a new spark plug today.
