I have had a 1983 Aero 50 for a couple years now and im trying to fix it up a bit, does anyone know if the lock cylinders from an 85 would fit this one, i know they changed a lot on the 85 model.
Also, I replaced the stock air filter with a cone one from here: http://store03.prostores.com/servlet/ge ... D50/Detail do i need to increase the jet size now? If i do does anyone know which one i need and where i can get it?
Lastly it tops out at about 35mph on a flat road right now, does that seem appropriate?

FYI, you made your scooter run worse without rejetting and are taking a chance of seizing the motor from being too lean. These things are not 4 stroke car engines that don't really care, these are high tuned and designed from the opening in the air box to the outlet of the exhaust as a system. You can't just change things. You need to know what you are doing. Oh and louder does not mean faster.

Re: Fixing Up an 83 Aero 50
I didnt do it in an attempt to gain any performance, im happy to run everything stock, but i didnt have the foam filter for the stock box (which also falls off from time to time since its mounting wasnt correct), so i thought it would be better than no filter at all. I did move the throttle pin to a richer setting because i had heard the air filter would lean out my mixture, but i did not realize leaning it out could cause it to seize. Bear, could you recommend what size jet i should have? Or how i can determine that?Bear45-70 wrote:FYI, you made your scooter run worse without rejetting and are taking a chance of seizing the motor from being too lean. I was also thinking about building some sort of case around the new filter and providing it with holes to breath about the same size as the stock box had, would that help?

OK, here goes: You are better off with the stock air filter. Part number 17205-GE8-000 from Honda, about $4 to $8 depending on your dealer. Remount the stock air properly and it will not fall off. With the stock air filter and air cleaner in place run an 85 main jet. I have no clue what would be needed. FYI, raising the needle only makes things richer in the mid range. It does nothing to help the WOT fuel/air mixture, which is where you will burn up your motor.nh_scooter wrote:I didnt do it in an attempt to gain any performance, im happy to run everything stock, but i didnt have the foam filter for the stock box (which also falls off from time to time since its mounting wasnt correct), so i thought it would be better than no filter at all. If you insist on keeping the aftermarket air filter you need to do plug chops to check the mixture.

Thank you for the info, I just bought a filter, i need to soak it in oil and squeeze it out, correct? I found the scooter in the trash at my local transfer station, so it was missing quite a few parts, i will sort out how to mount the housing properly.Bear45-70 wrote:

You can find parts by either posting in the For Sale/Want To Buy section here on the Forum.
Or you can check the web site for your local Honda dealer, most will have a parts breakdown, or use this one.
