Variator Question: Malossi or OEM Ruckus Variators on SA50

Post by Chisholm »

Hi,
Does anyone have any experience with the Malossi Ruckus variator on an SA50 Eite? Any idea how it would compare to the stock Ruckus variator on an Elite?
Here's some info on the Malossi Variator:

Malossi variator for ruckus/metro. measures 97mm comes with pulley, ramp plate,7gram rollers, sliders, and drive boss(boss for ruckus metro different than dio) 86.00$ + 13.00$ shipping to lower 48

I understand that the stock Ruckus is ~92 mm. And the Polini for Ruckus is 94.66, per Wheelman.

Will the Malossi for Ruckus fit? Would it be worth the $40 shipped vs the 28 for the Ruckus Stock?

Thanks.

I had to grind my case paper thin to get the 94.66mm Polini for Ruckus variator to fit.

Hello. I believe Wheelman-111 is running a 97mm variator on his elite. Maybe he will chime in.

Greetings:

I bought my Brand X "for Ruckus" on fEeBaY some months ago. Sight unseen, and to this day I'm not for sure what brand it is. Specs match the Malossi. I had ground my starter housing for the Polini which was 94mm and change. I really didn't grind any more putting this one in.

The limiting factor seems to be the other side of the Drive Face - the fixed half-pulley sheave. Even the Kymco ZX item has a flat part out by the rim where the Bendix teeth engage. The "slope" of the bigger inner face is not complemented by the flat on the outer face, so the belt only walks out so far. The search continues for a pulley whose 15 degree angle carries on farther out to the rim.

It looks like the $40 Malossi is gone. Would it have been much of an improvement over the OEM Ruckus Variator?

So, I got a Polini for Ruckus on TR for 50 shipped.

I wish someone would have told me to use my stock sleeve through the middle of the variator! The ruckus one is too long. I put it together, then went to kickstart it, and blew out a little circle in the aluminum on the cover! I took it apart, put the stock piece in and it's fine now.

It came with 6g rollers. I tried those and a mix with stock rollers, but it is fastest with stock rollers. I'm looking to get new rollers, what weight should I shoot for? I'm thinking 8 or 9 g's.
Stock other than 9:1 gears and variator.

Thanks.
