So what Trafficjamz has posted, is that a pic of a variator under an '86 kicker cover?
What this is ..........
A 1986 spree engine with a 1987 elite crank.
The rear pulley is from a urban express.
Honda made this engine.(sort of) It is the variated Pal engine.

so the elite crank goes right in????? i guess if you're doing a bbk and are going to open the engine up anyway, that doesn't sound too terrible...... so the crank uses the elite variator also?
you should make a new thread about what you did to make it work and post a link here so i can find it!
had to go look up what a Pal was..... a Canadian market Elite E/ES
so what i'm gathering now is that sb50 (Pal) engine components are compatible with nq50 (Spree) engines.
the sb50 crank will fit the sq50 with no mods to the engine, other than the variator it's bolt pattern will match. then you have to use a different rear pulley (you used the Express one) and it all goes under an Aero cover or a Modified Spree cover? the Pal cover will fit (?) but that is another harder to find part.

The pal cover is the only one that comes close to fitting.
The kicker swings the wrong way on aero covers.
It is not worth it to try this project......better off swapping a dio or aero engine.

Here's my reasoning..... I'm learning how to work on these with my spree. I had planned to swap but then decided I should just start with something else cuz after you change everything to make it go fast, you could have just bought an elite and saved a ton of money. Plus it'll never be as safe or reliable as an elite. So my 85 spree will keep it's engine but I wanted to try a bbk and add a 86-87 spree kickstart. I'm tearing everything apart anyway and replacing all those parts anyway so what's the problem?
It would be interesting... offer the crank, variator, rear clutch, belt, bendix, and cover as a kit. Prolly should include a set of lower bearings, seals, and a couple of piston circlips to round it out. Source an inexpensive version of the Tusk crank tool and sell it separately.
Just about everything would be already on the shelf somewhere in Asia... aside from the side cover. That's going to require something new.
