I Need an electric starter

Post by lowkeyguy »

Here is my story. I bought this 1984 Honda Spree last summer. It has 250 original miles on it. The guy I bought it from was the original owner. It sat in his shed for 15 years with gas in the tank which turned to turpentine. I have replaced the fuel tank, petcock and battery. I cleaned the carb several times. Last summer I could get it to start and idle, but it would not drive with a rider. It bogged down and died each time you tried. I've been playing with it once again and I think the starter is bad. When I press the ignition, the starter kicks 2-3 short bursts then just whines. Not enough to start the engine. Try again in a few minutes and get the same result. Any ideas? I am pretty sure I need a starter, but am not sure it will start once I have one. Anyone selling a starter? How much and how do we do the transaction? I am new to the site, but so far have found it very useful.

The starter's not the problem, it's the little geared bendix. Remove it and clean it out using WD40 and working it back/forth. Grease the ends and reinstall it. You have to removed the drive pulley to get it out; you can use an impact gun or hold the crankshaft by grabbing the nut under the fan.

As far as not coming off idle, sounds like the airbox is messed up. You did replace the air filter, right? Or did you let the engine suck the old, broken down one in?

If you are still looking for a starter, ebay is a good place to get one, they don't seem to auction many bendix(s) though...

Greg at uspmale@yahoo.com has some. I had to get a replacement for one of mine that had fallen apart.

This may be more trouble than I have time for. The spree is taking up valuable garage space. I may just get rid of it. It only has 226 original miles. 1984 Black with purple trim. I have the title. New battery & petcock. It is in Westland, MI if anyone is interested in taking a look.
