1986 spree wont run? why?
i bought a 1986 spree last fall, got it running. removed all the body panels to clean them. the scooter was running awesome. re installed the body panels, and now the scooter will not run. i put in fresh gas. i put it away for a couple of months and had my buddy look at it. the scooter is hard to start, and will back fire allot. cleaned the carb. the battery is out of it, and so is the electric stater. i spent about 6 hours trying to make it run. i put it away till last weekend, removed the old gas, and it fired up right away. but as soon as i take my hand of the rear brake lever the engine dies. cleaned the carb again. still wont run with the brake off. took apart the dash to see, if there was a pinched or disconnected wire. it all looked good. looked at the rear brake cable and there is no electrical wires around by the brake drum. this is really wierd. i ordered up a new bystarter, because this is a known problem. installed it, if anything it starts faster, but not if the rear brake is on. i disconnected the rear tail light wiring and the scooter ran awesome. checked the rear light bulb, and the fileament was burnt out and laying on the other fileament, so i am guessing. that this was the cause, guess again. now i am back to square one, and -$55, for the bystarter. any help would be greatfull. thank you.

It probably wasn't the bystarter.
Spree are notorious for poor wiring. Check the fuse holder for corrosion, and the chassis grounds (black wires screwed to the frame.) Haven't heard of one with your exact problem, but a freak occurance with the rear bulb is interesting. Did you try just removing it?
Otherwise it may have a clogged idle jet.

What's it doing, exactly? It sounds like the electric starter works, and it will run, but only with the brake engaged... is that right?

a guess: perhaps there is a short that is "engaged" when you activate the rear brake, and for some reason it screws up the spark--check and see if you have a spark when the brake is on (when the bike won't run). If the bike runs fine without the rear s*** hooked up, you should test all of the wiring that leads to and from that part of the bike.
