Actual Scooter Build: Step 4 - v.87
Per my other thread in the General section, I have acquired an 87 spree. I have performed steps 1-3 of an actual scooter build and as much as I didnt want to, I made it to step 4, forum help.
This thing starts perfect on the first kick every time but when you give it gas it just bogs and is flooding. The spark plug is black and wet. Compression is 100. New spark plug. Swapped the cdi and coil for known good ones. And I cant find any air leaks. Air box, with lid, are in place and in good shape.
So where should I look next?

I'd starting looking inside the carb. Pull it and check the main jet / emulsion tube. Verify they are the correct parts. This thing starts perfect on the first kick every time but when you give it gas it just bogs and is flooding. The spark plug is black and wet.

Sorry, forgot to add that i tried two different carbs and had the same result with both carbs.mousewheels wrote:I'd starting looking inside the carb. Pull it and check the main jet / emulsion tube. was the extra carb you tried from a running scoot?? or if they are both clean, then the only thing that you didn't change was the needle attached to the throttle cable. maybe try adjusting the clip position on the needle. probably raise the clip.

well it idles fine. just not much of anything once you start to twist the throttle, back wheel won't even turn. i thought the needle clip was more for "fine" tuning.dun rite wrote:was the extra carb you tried from a running scoot?? or if they are both clean, then the only thing that you didn't change was the needle attached to the throttle cable. maybe try adjusting the clip position on the needle. probably raise the clip.
Re: Actual Scooter Build: Step 4 - v.87
it is for fine tuning but if the needle doesnt match the emulsion tube then you get too much or not enough fuel off idle, the needle controls fuel from around 1/4th to 3/4ths throttle its really the most important part
pilot is for up to 1/4th and main is for 3/4 to full you can run a bike without a main
try puttinf the clip all the way up on the needle, lean it out as much as possible and see how that goes or the extreme all the way down for the richest mixture

Re: Actual Scooter Build: Step 4 - v.87
Well i went through and replaced all the gaskets and noticed the throttle slide was getting hung up and sticking wide open. So i fixed that and now it wont start or stay running unless i open the throttle some. Once i let go of it the bike dies, no matter how i adjust the screws. I also took the exhaust off and the muffler seems to be fine and the exhaust port doesnt seem to be clogged.
Re: Actual Scooter Build: Step 4 - v.87
what is the number on the main jet needle?
dont think this would cause it not to and idle though, IDk

Re: Actual Scooter Build: Step 4 - v.87
Only thing i can think of is the spark isnt strong enough. I tried 2 different coils and another cdi. But those didnt help
Re: Actual Scooter Build: Step 4 - v.87
i was jsut thinking about that too, have you checked the stator etc with a multitester?
